“It is a privilege to make films,” Nicole Kidman remarked following her acceptance of the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award.

The 56-year-old Kidman is the first performer from Australia to receive the organization’s top honor.

Meryl Streep handed the coveted trophy to the Moulin Rouge star in Hollywood.

Reese Witherspoon, co-star of Big Little Lies, and her husband, singer Keith Urban, were among the other celebrities there.

Wearing a floor-length, glittering gold Balenciaga gown, Kidman accepted the trophy and thanked all of the filmmakers she had collaborated with.

“Making movies is an honor. And wonderful to have worked on television and movies with these storytellers who gave me the freedom to be myself, let my hair down, and portray all these different kinds of women,” she remarked.

“Thank you for making me better at my craft and giving me a place, however temporary, in this world.”

Kidman broke down in tears during the ceremony as her husband described how she helped him understand “what love in action really looks like” following their 2006 wedding.

“I’m in rehab for three months, four months into our marriage,” Urban announced, turning to face Kidman and their two teenage daughters, who were joining her for the first time on the red carpet.

“Nic chose love against all of the criticism, probably even some of her own. And now it’s been eighteen years.”

Hugh Jackman, Cate Blanchett, and Russell Crowe—all Australian actors—also paid respect to the first-ever recipient of the award through a video.

In the 1990 film Days of Thunder, Kidman made her big screen debut with Tom Cruise, whom she married the same year.

Despite her divorce from him in 2001, she continued to become more well-known.

Before winning the best actress Oscar for The Hours in 2003, she was nominated for her first Oscar in 2001 for Moulin Rouge.
