I Am Number Four was meant to be the first film of a new franchise, but would there ever be a sequel? Other young adult book properties that may be made into movie franchises were snatched up by studios when the Twilight films became successful.
2011 saw the release of I Am Number Four, an adaptation of the first book in James Frey and Jobie Hughes’ Lorien Legacies series, written under the pen name Pittacus Lore. The film centers on a terrifying extraterrestrial race that tracks down and murders a group of young aliens who are hiding on Earth in a particular order. Number Four is the next target after the first three are killed, and he must defend himself.
There is a wealth of inspiration for I Am Number Four 2 if a studio so desired. The Lorien Legacies series consists of seven books, the first of which is I Am Number Four. Although a bigger franchise was always the goal, and I Am Number Four did quite well at the box office, a number of other issues caused plans for a sequel to be swiftly called into question.
What transpired during the production of The Power of Six, and is there any possibility that fans may ever see the story continue in some capacity?
I Am Number Four Was Put on Hold
Following the unfavorable critical reception of the first film, screenwriter Marti Noxon announced (via JoBlo) that the proposal for I Am Number Four 2, which would have continued the series, was shelved. I Am Number Four is rated at 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, with largely mediocre reviews.
Nevertheless, despite having a $50 million production budget, it made $150 million globally.
Even while those box office results were respectable for young adult film franchises, it is evident that they were insufficient to persuade the studio that The Power of Six was worthwhile, and I Am Number Four 2 was placed on indefinite hold.
This is unfortunate because Teresa Palmer’s role, Number Six, was considered a highlight of the original movie, and the sequel would center on her.
Will I Am Number Four 2 Ever Happen?
Since the debut of I Am Number Four, there hasn’t been any news about the potential production or release of I Am Number Four 2, which is probably terrible news for the sequel. D.J. Caruso hinted in a 2013 interview that DreamWorks was looking for ways to carry on the franchise with a follow-up to I Am Number Four. But nothing appears to have developed from those conversations.
It seems that DreamWorks scrapped its planned projects, including the I Am Number Four sequel, after a number of them didn’t turn out as well as the firm had hoped. Alex Pettyfer gave a 2021 update on I Am Number Four 2 in an interview with Screen Rant.
According to Pettyfer, DreamWorks had moved on and a sequel was probably never going to happen.
“As a whole, I believe the films may not have done as well as they ought to have. In order for DreamWorks to begin anew, the slate was essentially cleared. – Alex Pettyfer
There is Still a Strong Demand for I Am Number Four 2
Even after I Am Number Four was released on the big screen more than ten years ago, some fans are still hoping for a sequel. This is probably due to the film’s longevity, particularly in terms of the world-building as a whole.
I Am Number Four 2 would do well at the box office if it ever came out, although it is uncommon for a stand-alone picture to get this much hype from people wanting more, with the exception of some blockbuster franchise films like Joker. Since the original actors have aged out, it would be necessary to alter the cast and probably do a reboot.
There is still more to be done, and many fans are eager to see it, even if the well-liked book series gave rise to its own sequel series in Lorien Legacies Reborn. possibly though I Am Number Four 2 doesn’t appear realistic, the plot might eventually be reimagined as a new film or possibly a television show.
However, it seems unlikely that Teresa Palmer or Alex Pettyfer will return to the series in the future.
Teresa Palmer Hopes for a Sequel
Teresa Palmer is the only one who is genuinely interested in seeing I Am Number Four 2. Her role as Number Six puts her in the forefront of the action, and she is aware that the sequel was intended to be The Power of Six.
Palmer claims that when she signed on to the series, she had great expectations and thought it would be a great chance for her future. Palmer hoped that something would be revived with a much-anticipated sequel, but regrettably, it ended with the single film.
“The following in the series was The Power of Six! I’ve experienced this a few times in my career, where you sign on to three projects and think, “Oh my gosh, it’s gonna be a trilogy,” and you become really thrilled and attached to the cast. It was incredibly sad to learn that they weren’t producing a sequel.
Palmer joins Alex Pettyfer, who, when asked about I Am Number Four 2, made the same generic remarks. However, it appears that the studio wanted to cut its losses with the single film, and the two actors never received their wish for more stories in that world, which eventually expanded to include a huge series and spin-offs with more stories in the world.
“That still pains me,” Palmer acknowledged. “I meet people like you who are like,” We liked the movie! “So, I’m disappointed, but look, never say never, I would be down.”
