As Saturday Night Live prepares to kick off its 51st season on October 4, 2025, fans are preparing to say farewell to four cast members who have left a lasting mark on the show. Cast departures are an annual part of SNL’s cycle, and this year sees both long-standing and newer members stepping away before the season premiere.
Heidi Gardner: Ending Eight Memorable Seasons
After eight seasons, Heidi Gardner has confirmed her exit. Known for her versatility, Gardner created fan-favorite characters on Weekend Update, such as teen film critic Bailey Gismert and “every boxer’s girlfriend” Angel, and stole the show in sketches and digital shorts. Her parody as Michael Jordan’s bodyguard in The Last Dance sketch remains one of her most celebrated performances.

Gardner admitted to “sketch fatigue” in an interview with Craig Ferguson on his Joy podcast:
“At this point, after doing Groundlings and SNL for so long, I’m like, ‘I’ve written a lot of sketches.’”
Her departure marks the end of a highly influential era for SNL.
Michael Longfellow: The Deadpan Star of Weekend Update
Joining in Season 48, Michael Longfellow became a fan favorite for his deadpan comedic timing, particularly on Weekend Update. From jokes about TikTok bans to his experiences as a child of divorce, Longfellow left an unforgettable impression during his three years.
On Instagram, he reflected on leaving:
“Will not be returning for a 4th season at SNL… Lorne, you gave me the greatest job in the world and changed my life. You even put my mom on TV. Thank you doesn’t begin to cover it, but thank you.”
Devon Walker: Bold Characters and Memorable Sketches
Also part of Season 48, Devon Walker impressed audiences with impersonations of figures like New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Michael Strahan, as well as original creations like lactose-intolerant rappers Milly Pounds and Shirty.
Walker told Rolling Stone about his departure:
“I think I felt ready to leave the show, and I think the show felt ready to leave me. I was just ready to do something else. We both felt like it was time.”
Emil Wakim: A Fresh Voice in Season 50
Emil Wakim, who joined as a featured cast member in Season 50, played characters including Julius Caesar and Luigi Mangione, while also contributing to Weekend Update with segments on American patriotism and the 2024 election.
Reflecting on his exit, Wakim shared on Instagram:
“I won’t be returning to SNL next year. It was a gut punch of a call to get, but I’m so grateful for my time there.”
Looking Ahead to Season 51
While SNL bids farewell to these four performers, their exits create space for new talent to join the show in Season 51. Fans can expect a blend of classic sketches, Weekend Update satire, and fresh characters that continue SNL’s tradition of mixing veteran performers with rising stars.
