Donald Trump has once again retaliated against reporters who have inquired about a contentious matter, which is Qatar’s donation of a $400 million jet to be used as Air Force One.
Yesterday, ABC News was the first to reveal that the administration intends to accept the donation, and that it will be moved to Trump’s presidential library after he leaves office. This information was initially reported by ABC News.
The Chief White House Correspondent for NBC News, Peter Alexander, inquired about the jet gift as President Trump was in the Oval Office to meet with South African Cyril Ramaphosa. Trump became enraged by the question.
“You know, you ought to get out of here. What does this have to do with the Qatari jet? They are giving the United States Air Force a jet, OK? And it’s a great thing. We’re talking about a lot of other things, and it is NBC trying to get off the subject of what you just saw. You are a terrible reporter. Number one, you don’t have what it takes to be a reporter. You are not smart enough. But for you to go on to a subject about a jet that was given to the United States Air Force, which is a very nice thing.”
This was followed by Trump’s assertion that Qatar was providing an investment of $5.1 trillion in addition to the jet.
“You ought to go back to your studio at NBC, because Brian Roberts and the people that run that place, they ought to be investigated,” Trump said. “They are so terrible the way you run that network. And you are a disgrace. No more questions from you.”
President Trump has been particularly irritated by the issues that have been raised regarding the Qatar plane. He expressed his anger last week when he was confronted with a query from an ABC News reporter who inquired about the allegation that the plane would ultimately be a gift to him. As the week progressed, President Trump took to Truth Social to threaten the network with yet another lawsuit for the coverage it had provided on the airliner. In a manner similar to what he did with NBC, he also called out the CEO of the parent business, this time Bob Iger.
NBC News and Comcast did not immediately respond to calls for comment from their respective companies’ spokespersons.
For a long time, Trump has been criticizing the chief executive officers of major media corporations for the reporting that occurs within their news divisions. During his first tenure, he expressed his displeasure with a report that was broadcast on NBC News and proposed that Comcast should be stripped of its license to operate within the Federal Communications Commission. Alexander has also been the target of the president’s ire in the past, including in the year 2020, when the Covid pandemic was just beginning, for a relatively insignificant issue regarding what he ought to say to those in the United States who were afraid of the virus.
Today, ABC News announced that the United States Department of Defense has officially accepted the gift of the luxurious jet.
During his conversation with Ramaphosa in the Oval Office, President Trump presented Ramaphosa with a film that he said provided evidence to support his assertions that white South Africans were victims of mass killings. The use of the term “genocide” to describe the event is, according to FactCheck.org, an inaccurate assessment of the meaning of the term. It was Ramaphosa’s attempt to disprove Trump’s assertions.
Trump was informed by Ramaphosa, “I’m sorry I don’t have a plane to give you,” Ramaphosa said.
“I hope that you did. I am willing to accept that,” Trump stated.
