Winona Ryder Shares Her Decision to Leave Hollywood after Her 2001 Shoplifting Arrest: The line “I checked out”

In a recent interview, Winona Ryder stated that the arrest “definitely had a giant effect.”

After her conviction for shoplifting in December 2001 and the subsequent negative publicity, Winona Ryder “checked out” of Hollywood.

Despite the fact that Ryder, 52, has previously discussed the arrest, she recently reflected on the incident’s consequences in a new interview with Esquire, which was published on Thursday, Aug. 29.

She replied to the magazine, “I checked out,” when inquired about her reaction to her arrest. “I think I just checked out.”

Beetlejuice The heroine from Beetlejuice was arrested for shoplifting clothing valued at $5,500 from a Saks Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills, California. She was convicted of grand larceny and thievery in December 2001, one year later.

She was sentenced to three years of probation, fines, and community service. She ceased acting and relocated from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Winona Ryder disclosed to that the atmosphere was distinct upon her return to Hollywood.

“There was a period when I was not in season,” she recalled. “It was like 10, 12, 15 years, and it did coincide with everything that happened [in her life] but also, if you look at the period from 2000 to 2010: wow! It was the most degrading time to be a woman. Even the cool people were participating in what felt like it should be off-limits.”

Ryder stated that the arrest “definitely had a giant effect” on her career, and that she initially believed it was a straightforward error.

“It kept being like, ‘Oh, it’s fine, this is just, like, paperwork,’ and I was like, ‘OK.’ I was so confused,” she said.

Ryder was taken aback when she was informed that she could be sentenced to a period of imprisonment. I just recall being informed that I was going to be sent to prison. I was Like,  ‘Huh? What are you talking about?’ ” she told.

The altering tone of internet coverage of young female celebrities also caused Ryder to feel “really scared.” “It appeared as though there was a change in the industry and the culture regarding what was considered acceptable and rewarded,” she stated.

Ryder stated in a 2016 interview with Porter that her departure from Hollywood provided her with the leisure she “really needed.”

“Psychologically, I must have been at a place where I just wanted to stop,” she said at the time. “I won’t get into what happened, but it wasn’t what people think. And it wasn’t like the crime of the century! But it allowed me time that I really needed, where I went back to San Francisco and got back into things that … I just had other interests, frankly.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Ryder’s latest film, is scheduled to be released in theaters on September 6. Ryder attended the Venice Film Festival, where the film premiered on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
