Why did Christopher Eccleston leave Doctor Who?
A statement was released by BBC, confirmed that Eccleston would not be staying in the role due to fear of being typecast. A month later, the organisation apologised to pass such statement without consulting the actor.
In 2010, Christopher Eccleston revealed the reason of leaving the show, the actor stated that he didn’t enjoy the environment and the culture.
“I wasn’t comfortable. I thought ‘If I stay in this job, I’m going to have to blind myself to certain things that I thought were wrong.’ And I think it’s more important to be your own man than to be successful, so I left. But the most important thing is that I did it, not that I left. I really feel that, because it kind of broke the mould and it helped to reinvent it. I’m very proud of it.”
In an interview with Radio Times in 2010, he stated, He said, “I was open-minded, but I decided after my experience on the first series that I didn’t want to do any more. I didn’t enjoy the environment and the culture that we, the cast and crew, had to work in.”

In 2018, he told Radio Times, “My relationship with my three immediate superiors – the showrunner, the producer and co-producer – broke down irreparably during the first block of filming and it never recovered. They lost trust in me, and I lost faith and trust and belief in them”.

“I left because of politics. I did not see eye to eye with them. I didn’t agree with the way things were being run. I didn’t like the culture that had grown up around the series. So I left, I felt, over a principle.” said Eccleston.
Did Christopher Eccleston Return To The Show?
In 2013, Eccleston was offered to return to Doctor Who for the show’s 50th anniversary special, ‘The Day of the Doctor’. He gave a chance to read writer Steven Moffat’s script, made fans hopeful about his come back . However he decided not to return. Although hasn’t yet return to the show, he has made a come back to Doctor Who for audio adventures, created by Big Finish Productions.
