He died of a heart attack on January 25, 2004, during a match between his team Benfica and Vitória de Guimares in Guimares.
What Happened With Miklos Feher?
Miklos Feher, a Hungarian footballer for Benfica, died in 2004. He suffered a potential heart attack during his team’s league match against Vitoria Guimaraes. Feher who came on as a replacement in the 60th minute was shown a yellow card as the game reached stoppage time. He looked to smile before bending over and placing his hands on his knees before falling backward. His teammates raced to his help and one of them cradled his head.
While Feher was being treated, other Benfica players fell on their knees on the pitch to pray. Many members of the club, including coach Jose Antonio Camacho, were obviously distressed and crying. Feher had joined the Lisbon team at the start of the previous season from their arch-rivals Porto.
Miklós was swiftly taken to the hospital in an ambulance that had to drive onto the pitch. The Benfica center back, Argel opened the ambulance door and shouted, “Don’t let him die.”
Unfortunately, Fehér’s death was confirmed around three hours later. The cause of his death was determined to be cardiac arrhythmia caused by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disease. This condition is recognized as a primary cause of cardiac arrests in young athletes like Marc Vivien Foe, and it is often asymptomatic.

The Hungary national team squad paid tribute to Miklos Feher’s memory on 9th October 2009, the day before their 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Portugal in Lisbon. They laid a wreath next to a metal bust of Feher at Benfica’s home ground. On July 20, 2022, which would have been his 43rd birthday, Hungarian club Puskás Akadémia FC paid tribute to him before a UEFA Europa Conference League game at the stadium where he passed away.
It’s incredible how death can take people away in the most gruesome ways. He was delighted, joking about getting a yellow card for wasting time, which didn’t matter because his team was about to win with the sole goal scored, and he had assisted in scoring it. He was overjoyed when something unexpected happened.
Nobody could have foreseen it, neither the fans, his teammates, or his opponents. He abruptly slumped forward, dropped to his knees, and collapsed on the ground. Unfortunately, he never recovered.
