Konkr.io draws its inspiration from the iconic arcade game Breakout. Originally developed by Atari in 1976, Breakout tasks players with controlling a paddle to bounce a ball and destroy a wall of bricks. Konkr.io modernizes this concept, blending the classic mechanics with contemporary graphics and gameplay features. Players still aim to break blocks with precision, but Konkr.io introduces new elements and challenges, creating a refreshed experience while paying homage to its retro roots.
Know About the Game
Konkr, developed by Michal Bureš, is a turn-based strategy game that pays homage to the classic simplicity found in Sean O’Connor’s Slay. The game is designed with the philosophy of being “easy to learn, hard to master,” making it accessible for newcomers while offering a deep and challenging experience for seasoned players.
Its mechanics are crafted to be intuitive and fast-paced, allowing players to quickly grasp the basics and dive into the action. Despite its straightforward nature, Konkr provides a richly strategic experience, reminiscent of chess, where every decision and move can significantly influence the outcome.
This balance of simplicity and depth ensures that Konkr remains engaging and thought-provoking, inviting players to explore and refine their strategies as they progress.

Goal of the game
In Konkr, tiles of the same color that are connected form a province, as long as they have at least one town. All green provinces are under your control. Your main goal is to expand your territory and destroy all rival towns.
-
Economy
At the start of your turn, each of your provinces:
-
- Earns one coin for each tile in the province.
- Pays for its units and castles.
- Stores any extra coins in towns.
- The total amount of coins in your towns is called the province treasury. Use coins from this treasury to buy new units and castles for the province.
-
Conquest
Every building and unit in the game has a strength level from 0 to 4. Strength is important for conquering enemy tiles and protecting your own tiles. To conquer an enemy tile, your attacking unit must be stronger than each of the defending units and buildings.
-
Politics
In Konkr, opponents behave like real people:
-
- They play to win.
- They hold grudges.
- They team up against stronger players.
- They might act out of desperation.
- The emoji above enemy towns shows how the rival feels about you. Don’t get too comfortable if they like you—everyone plays to win, and so should you.
-
Bandits
Units that don’t get paid turn into bandits. This change is permanent, so make sure you pay your units! Bandits act only in their own interest. They move randomly on the map and steal income from the tiles they land on. Stolen coins are taken to a nearby Bandit camp. These camps can create new bandits once they have at least 3 coins stored.
-
Strategy Tips
- A steady income is crucial. Don’t buy or upgrade advanced units until necessary.
- Use your economy to your advantage. Cut off your enemies’ soldiers and bankrupt their provinces!
- Walls allow your units to retreat when attacked.
- Sometimes the best move is to wait. Let your enemies fight among themselves while your treasury grows.
-
Advanced Controls
- You can perform many actions in Konkr using the keyboard—check out the hotkeys on the left!
- When you click the Undo button at the start of your turn, you can either rewind time to the start of the previous turn (up to 3 times per game) or restart the current map.
What Game Was Konkr.io Based on?
Konkr.io is a strategy game that may seem simple at first glance but offers surprising depth, drawing inspiration from Sean O’Connor’s Slay. In this game, you expand your kingdom, develop your economy, and strategically conquer both enemies and allies.
From a technical perspective, here are some details you might find interesting:
- The game is developed using TypeScript, which has made it manageable to maintain a project of this scale, unlike using vanilla JavaScript.
- ImmutableJS is used for state management, allowing the entire game state to remain immutable while generating new states with minimal CPU and memory usage. This approach makes implementing features like Undo and Rewind straightforward and helps the AI efficiently explore potential moves.
- Konkr.io is built as a progressive web app with a UI that automatically adjusts between desktop and mobile-friendly layouts depending on the viewport size.
Conclusion
Konkr.io stands out as a strategically rich game that, while initially simple, offers deep gameplay inspired by Sean O’Connor’s Slay. Its development journey reflects significant achievements, particularly as the creator’s first major Phaser project.
The use of TypeScript and ImmutableJS highlights a commitment to efficient and maintainable code, while the progressive web app design ensures a seamless experience across devices. Overall, Konkr.io promises an engaging and addictive experience, showcasing both strategic depth and technical innovation.
