Good crime procedurals are something that the United Kingdom routinely produces in terms of television. There is no shortage of British crime dramas for aficionados of the genre to watch, including favorites like “Broadchurch,” starring David Tennant and Olivia Coleman, and “Silent Witness,” which began airing in 1996 and is still going strong after 23 seasons.

While new dramas are always being produced, long-running shows, such as BBC’s “Line of Duty” and ITV’s “Unforgotten,” tend to acquire dedicated audiences and consistently top the rating charts.
The later series, which premiered in 2015, follows a squad of London detectives led by DCI Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) and DS Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan as they investigate cold cases (Sanjeev Bhaskar).

Following Cassie and Sunny as they solve the mystery behind the murder and track down the persons involved, each season of “Unforgotten” focuses on a fresh cold case once a body is discovered.

The case in Season 1 features a 17-year-old boy whose remains are discovered during a house demolition. At the same time, the duo’s personal lives are changing, with Seasons 3 and 4 focusing on Cassie’s relationship with her father after he is diagnosed with dementia.

Season 4 of “Unforgotten” concluded on ITV in March before moving to PBS, and fans are eagerly looking forward to Season 5 — especially after the shocking Season 4 finale. Here’s all we know about Season 5 of “Unforgotten.” Please be aware that there will be spoilers for Season 4 of “Unforgotten.”

When Will the Fifth Season of Unforgotten Be Released?

Seasons of “Unforgotten” are released every 15 months on average, with Season 1 launching in October 2015, Season 2 in January 2017, and Season 3 a little later in July 2018. The pandemic and production constraints impacted Season 4 of “Unforgotten,” pushing the launch date back to February 22, 2021. Fortunately for “Unforgotten” fans, the popular series has already been renewed for a fifth season, as creator Chris Lang confirmed on Twitter shortly after the Season 4 finale.

With many television shows returning to their regular production schedules, it’s safe to presume “Unforgotten” will as well. This implies that fans of the gripping crime drama may expect to see the London detective team return in the late spring or early summer of 2022. Fans of “Unforgotten” should be aware that the industry could experience delays in late 2021 or beyond, delaying the publication of the second season, but for the time being, everything appears to be on schedule.

Who Will Appear in Season 5 of Unforgotten?

The friendship between Cassie and Sunny as they work on cases together is one of the things that keeps fans coming back to “Unforgotten” season after season. Cassie dies from brain damage after a vehicle accident at the end of Season 4, putting an end to their cooperation.

ITV congratulated Walker for “performing the magnificent part of Cassie Stuart” in “Unforgotten” in a statement issued on the show’s official Twitter, before clarifying that Walker and Lang decided jointly that Cassie would die in the Season 4 finale. The statement went on to say that Season 5 will feature “a new case for  Sunny DIKhan, as well as a new ‘Partner in Crime’ for him.”

It’s possible that Walker’s choice to leave the show was influenced by her upcoming crime drama “Annika,” or that she simply felt it was time for Cassie’s tale to come to a close.

Despite the tragic news of Walker’s leaving, the show must go on, and Sunny’s companion will be replaced by someone fresh. ITV has yet to reveal who will replace Cassie, so viewers will have to wait and watch as Season 5 progresses.

In terms of the remainder of the cast, fresh actors will fill out the surrounding positions connected to the new case, while several characters from Season 4 will return. DS Murray Boulting is played by Jordan Long, and DC Lewis Reeves is played by Lewis Reeves. Sunny’s romantic life partner, Sal, is played by Jake Collier, Carolina Main as DC Fran Lingley, Georgia Mackenzie as Dr. Leanne Balcombe, Janet Dibley as Jenny, and Michelle Bonnard as Jenny.

Due to their strong relationship with Cassie, a couple of the other recurring characters are in jeopardy, albeit her boss, Colin R. Campbell as DSI Clive Andrews, is expected to stay.

What Will the Fifth Season of Unforgotten Be About?

The fourth season of “Unforgotten” centers on the murder of Matthew Walsh, the whose decapitated body is discovered in a trash heap freezer. Cassie is compelled to return to work following a mental breakdown in Season 3 as a result of the intense trauma of that season’s dark case.

She also has to deal with her father’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis and her changing relationship with him. Sunny appears to be in a good position at work and with Sal, but he is understandably concerned about Cassie.

Throughout Season 4, the truth about what happened to Walsh emerges, exposing that Walsh was far from innocent, having committed a number of significant crimes just before his death. But it was his decision to murder a guy named Stephen, who happened to be the brother of suspect Dean Barton (Andy Nyman), that prompted Dean to seek vengeance and kill Walsh.

Cassie gets T-boned by a speeding automobile and suffers a significant head injury just before the truth is revealed and the guilty persons are apprehended. The doctors try to rescue Sunny while they finish their research, but she dies in surgery.

Sunny and the rest of the crew will be grieving Cassie’s death while also adjusting to a new partner in the future (whoever that may be). It will undoubtedly be an emotional period for the detectives, but they must continue working, and what kind of case they will confront in Season 5 is anyone’s guess.

In a recent interview with PBS’ Masterpiece 50, Lang said, “It’s the story’s most political chapter thus far, with a little ‘p.’ It really gets to the heart of where the UK is politically, and it clearly introduces him to a new partner in crime, which is both nice and refreshing.

It’s a woman, and she’s not Cassie. That’s about all I can say about her. She’s at a different point in her life now. She is the younger of the two. She’s his boss once more.”
