Top Gun Maverick: Will Iceman Die In The Movie, Or Already Be Dead When It Begins

Top Gun Maverick is the sequel to the classic action film Top Gun. It’s one of those movies that really started to put Tom Cruise on the map. The late Tony Scott directed the film. Even though it’s been 30 years since Top Gun came out, many people are still fond of the film.

Top Gun Maverick Doesn’t Have Many Returning Actors

So, the fact that a sequel is coming shouldn’t be a surprise in the slightest. Not much of the old film’s cast is coming back for this, though. This may owe to the fact that this movie is coming three decades after. Age is definitely a factor here.

Tom Cruise, of course, is back in the lead role. He doesn’t seem to age like us humans do. He’s reprising his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, hence the name of the movie. We do have a new actor in the role of the love interest, though.

It was Kelly McGillis in the original, but it’s Jennifer Connelly this time around. Miles Teller is another newcomer in the film, playing the son Maverick’s deceased co-pilot, Goose. With so much turnover in the cast, fans were starved for a glimpse of familiar faces.

Val Kilmer’s Iceman Is A Fan-Favourite

One of the faces they demanded the most was that of Val Kilmer. Kilmer’s turn as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky is iconic. Top Gun Maverick and Iceman’s rivalry is one of the best parts of the movie, and Iceman is a real fan-favourite.

Among the people who were desperate to see Iceman in the movie is Val Kilmer himself. In his memoir titled I’m Your Huckleberry, Kilmer mentions that he begged the film’s producer to have Iceman return somehow.

It’s highly likely that he’ll be back, too. Kilmer writes, “The producers went for it. Cruise went for it. Cruise couldn’t have been cooler. … Tom and I took up where we left off. The reunion felt great.”

Iceman May Be Dead In Top Gun Maverick

That’s wonderful news for fans of the character, but there is one wrinkle – Iceman might be dead already. ScreenRant puts it perfectly in their article. If he wasn’t going to be in the movie to start with, whatever role he does have isn’t likely to be significant.

On top of that, a trailer for the film also shows Maverick saluting someone’s coffin, as the American flag is draped on it. All of these clues hint strongly to the theory that Iceman may in fact be dead.

We’ll have to wait a while until we can find out, though. Top Gun Maverick was originally going to come out on June 24, 2020. However, the coronavirus pandemic has forced Paramount to push it back.

The movie is now coming out on December 23, 2020.
