The Intriguing Poster

The poster of the series is enough to pique the curiosity of the viewers. The poster shows the figure of a lady coming out of a lake. Her face is not seen as she is shown from the back. The house is seen in the corner.  It is clear from the picture that the lady is looking at a house which may be her target place.

The house itself carries a strange air of discomfort. The interplay of light and dark enhances the mysterious mood of the story. The story is set in 1890s England

The story follows typical Gothic tradition. It is set inside a big and scary mansion with big hallways. Serpentine structure and mazy ways.

Miles and Flora

Showcasing the amazing cast of The Haunting of Hill House Season 2 / Haunting of Bly Manor!

Miles and Flora are children who are possessed by the ghost of Peter Quint and his love interest Rebecca Jessel. Miles’ strange behaviour and Flora’s blackout are due to being possessed. The scary dialogues spoken by the children were done amazingly and they would give you goosebumps.

The children were manipulated by Quint into being possessed. He offered something they couldn’t refuse. He told them they could be in ” Forever home”, being tucked away in happy dreams of the past. This tells us about the addictive nature of past trauma which often manipulates towards destruction.

Peter Quint

The ghost of Peter Quint emerges as the villain of the story. His hatred and vengeance are rooted in his traumatic past. An abusive father and misfit mother made his life a living hell. Even when he thought he would be happy with Rebecca, he was refused by her. His lifelong quest for peace and stability was never fulfilled.

After becoming a ghost, he wanted to live happily with Rebecca. But even that was not possible. Viola Willoughby the lady in the lake, using her gravitational force made sure no soul could ever be released of Bly Manor.

The Lady in the Lake

Viola Willoughby is the lady of the lake. She is the centre of all supernatural energy. She’s the one who killed Peter Quint by choking to death. When this very way of death is mentioned by Rebecca, a Quint possessed Miles just laughs.

The face of this ghost is never seen. She seems to have a fading face, unclear and amorphous. Her hazy face perhaps stands for the dead-end of a future that residents share. In fact, without Dani’s interference and presence, everyone in that house would permanently be trapped in that miserable purgatory.

Conclusion

Mike Flanagan’s projects tend to make you think. And horror is the genre that explores Flanagan’s craftsmanship the best. Flanagan has directed the sequel to  The Shining, Doctor Sleep. We have always known him to execute ventures in the way only he can.

The series is very different from a typical ghost story, even though it does contain all traditional Gothic components. It is meant for both a horror movie hardcore fan as well as for new viewers of the genre.
