What is it that I am so concerned about?

The plot revolves around Marla Grayson, a court-appointed legal guardian who defrauds her elderly charges as part of a con-artist duo with her colleague Fran. But when the duo set their eyes on swindling affluent retiree Jennifer Peterson. They immediately realized they’d bitten off more than they could chew. Jennifer has a shady history and ties to a mafia, and she swiftly makes things tough for Marla and Fran.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?

It’s like a David Fincher version of The Big Short, except for one of the many. Many (many) other corrupt American organizations that victimize the innocent while rewarding slimy, manipulative shit birds. Marla is unquestionably an antihero, reminiscent of some of the movies’ greediest, ickiest antiheroes, such as Daniel Plainview, Don Corleone, or the slimewad protagonist from a Fincher classic, Mark Zuckerberg.

Performance Worth Watching

In this sociopathy duel, Pike almost edges out Dinklage. Both love the opportunity to be totally despised — he drinks smoothies, wears a topknot, and works the steady rings; she vapes, wears red spike heels, and sweats it out in spin class — but she just gets more screen time. Wiest, on the other hand, steals a scene with peppery taste; see “memorable lines” below.

Memorable Dialogue

Jennifer shakes off the effects of her prescription-drug coma just long enough to tell Marla, “Have at it, you little crock of (omg, Weist uses the C-WORD here!).” “Go for it.”

Our Take

I Care a Lot begins outrageously, in the literal sense that it fires our fury. Not for yet another film that pushes us to agree with a disempathetic scoundrel’s point of view. But for Marla’s victims, whose lives are taken from them. Also the system that allows such schemes to succeed. Marla is nasty, brutal, hideous, and completely credible to those of us who battle to remain idealistic Americans.

In the face of so many late-capitalist profiteers’ flagrant hypocrisy and unashamed greed. The film might be about the healthcare system, insurance firms, internet service providers, social media platforms, nonprofit charities, corporate stores, utilities, or the government. But it is not about banks, whose misdeeds have already been documented in ruthlessly satirical films like this one.

So it’s disgusting at first, because we envision ourselves in the shoes of Marla’s victims. Who have been cuckoo-nested right out of their existence. With all of their goods, money, and liberty taken away. We were hoping for a serious Mark Ruffalo-style character to enter the story. And whistleblower her into prison, but instead we get Chris Messina as Roman’s lawyer. A mushy mollusk in a purple tie more of a light purple, not quite periwinkle.

He says in so many words that she’s dealing with the wrong people and may end up kaput skies. If she doesn’t take this suitcase holding a nice payoff to free Jennifer from her bonds. This is when she doubles down on Roman. And the goddamn movie demands us to choose whether we want to sympathize with the malefactor operating. Within the all-too-easily corruptible system of American justice or the one working outside of it. And, if I’m not incorrect, writer/director J Blakeson claims that people within are further along the moral spectrum than those without.
