Ever since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, Marvel fans have been wondering about the future of Deadpool franchise.
Just a few years ago when 20th Century Fox lined up a series of flops, it was the low-budget, R-rated superhero movie that made a big difference for Fox. Soonafter, it became their hottest property and a sequel was immediately greenlit.
Everything was going smooth for them but then Disney bought 20th Century Fox. Hence, putting future Deadpool plans on hold.
Even though Disney is smart enough to retain the Deadpool franchise, fans are still left with some genuine questions.
So, in this post, I’ll try my best to clear the air around the Deadpool Franchise and where it stands in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, lets get started:
Deadpool 3 Release Date
We’re still waiting on an official release date for the third movie, but we do now know that long-time Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin have been hired to write the threequel.
Disney has got a host of release dates for unconfirmed Marvel movies throughout 2022 and 2023.
At this moment in time, we fear we might be waiting until one of the 2023 dates – February 17, May 5, July 28 and November 3, especially given that Marvel movies have been pushed back this year as a result of the ongoing global situation.
Once a filming start date has been confirmed, we should have a better idea of when the Merc with a Mouth will return.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige on Deadpool 3
In an interview given to Collider.com, this is what Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had to say on the future of Deadpool 3:
“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now… It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor.”
“We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”
Deadpool 3 Possible Storyline
Reynolds had expressed some doubts about where the franchise could go after the second movie.
“I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don’t think that you can keep doing that,” he explained.
Reynolds has teased that the threequel is “looking to go in a completely different direction”, teasingly adding: “Often, they reboot or change a character maybe like four movies too late.”
The movie is still expected to be rated R, so don’t worry about that, but it’s unclear how the movie’s MCU connection will play a part in the continuity of the series from the first two movies, or if it’ll effectively be a soft reboot.
Conclusion
With WandaVision premiering this January and superhero series like LOKI & the Falcon and the Winter Soldier lined up ahead, for 2021, Disney+ is at the moment focusing on going up against DCEU’s series like Krypton, The Flash and Batwoman.
