Spider-Man May Appear In “New Avengers”

Spider-Man

Fans were devastated when news broke that Sony and Marvel had parted ways over contract issues. The thought of Spider-Man no longer being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was admittedly very difficult. After all, Marvel Studios successfully managed to breathe new life into the character after Sony lost its way.

That Spider-Man’s role in the MCU was in jeopardy came to light in August 2019. Both movie studios were unable to resolve issues related to the rights to the character. Reports suggested that Disney asked a new deal; that all Spider-Man projects be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between Marvel and Sony. Declining the offer, Sony instead proposed leaving the current agreement as it was, which meant that Marvel would continue to receive approximately 5% of first-dollar gross while holding onto the merchandising rights.

Spider-Man: Homeless?

As negotiations stalled, Spider-Man’s future looked bleak. But over a month later, fans were happy to learn that Tom Holland managed to pursue Bob Iger to keep the deal alive after a late-night drunk call. As per the agreement, Sony and Marvel would co-finance the third Spider-Man flick. Interestingly, the deal also meant that Spider-Man would appear in an undisclosed team-up movie.

Personally, I doubt that Sony and Marvel ever stopped negotiating. I think both studios got their way; Sony got the rights to reference the MCU in their own Spider-Verse and Disney got a better financial deal.

But given how deadset Spider-Man: Far From Home was on making Peter Parker the heir to Tony Stark’s legacy, I believe there is more at play here. Reports have emerged that Peter Parker will headline a New Avengers movie.

Spider-Man

If true, this has wide meaning implications on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU needs a new poster-boy and who better than their most recognizable character ever?
