The Sonos Arc is the latest soundbar from the premium audio brand. It replaces their current soundbar offering, the Sonos Playbar. That product had been around since 2013, though, so they were long overdue for an upgrade.
Sonos Arc Supports Dolby Atmos
One of the most interesting features of the Sonos Arc is that it has support for Dolby Atmos. This is the audio standard that many theatres use to provide great audio to the audience. The way it works is that it bounces audio off the ceiling. This makes for an incredibly immersive audio experience, giving you the impression that the sound is coming from different heights.
The Sonos Arc is also packed with some modern features on top of this. If you want to take advantage of the Dolby Atmos integration, you’d have to connect it to your TV via HDMI. This due to the fact that the eARC standard that Dolby Atmos needs is only available via the latest HDMI 2.1.
Sonos Arc Has Some Handy Smart Features
Your TV will also need support for this new standard. That said, the Sonos Arc also works with older HDMI standards, as well as optical audio. It packs quite the punch, too. It has 11 speakers in total, along with four woofers. So, audio quality and bass shouldn’t be a problem at all.
It’s also got some handy smart features. The new software that Sonos has packed into the Arc lets it connect to WiFi and stream music from various services. This includes their own Sonos radio, as well as Spotify and Apple Music, among others.
Sonos Arc Comes In At A Steep Price
It also has support for Apple’s AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect. Whatever setup you have at home already, the Sonos Arc should fit right in. This 45-inch soundbar comes in at a retail price of $799. It ships from June 10, 2020, and is available in either black or white.
Since movie theatres are closed, this might be a worthwhile upgrade. That said, some analysts, such as Tom Parsons of What Hi-Fi, think the price might be a bridge too far for some.
“These are also uncertain times for a lot of people, and forking out £800 on a luxury item such as this is going to take some serious consideration,” he told the BBC. Still, if you’re in the market for a soundbar, this one might be worth a look.
