Selena Gomez talks about the past few years of her path toward self-love!
The 31-year-old singer of “Love On” and Wondermind co-founder Mandy Teefey, her mother, participated in a panel discussion at SXSW on Sunday titled “Mindfulness Over Perfection: Getting Real On Mental Health.”
Moderator Dr. Jessica Stern questioned Gomez candidly about whether or not her 2022 Apple TV+ documentary My Mind & Me, which examined mental health, affected the way she cared for herself.

“Listening to the things I was saying about myself in the beginning makes me sick. The star of Only Murders in the Building stated, “It bums me out,” adding that the movie was filmed over a period of six years.
“But I think everybody can relate to that feeling,” she went on to say, “It’s important to speak to yourself with kindness, but I don’t think I really understood that [at the start of the film].”
Alek Keshishian’s film My Mind & Me followed the pop sensation as she battled body image and confidence issues, suicidal thoughts that forced her to postpone a tour and resulted in a bipolar disorder diagnosis, her battle with lupus, and the exhaustion that comes with being a well-known person worldwide.
After watching Girl, Interrupted and striking up a conversation about how odd the Hollywood world is and how Gomez felt like she didn’t “fit in,” Gomez said Teefey, 47, motivated her to share her journey and be more real.

The singer of “Lose You to Love Me” admitted in the chat that “you can’t force someone” to examine their mental health honestly and seek treatment before they’re ready.
“A lot of folks who truly wanted me to do things I wasn’t ready for cared about me more than I cared about myself. Gomez reflected on her road toward mental health, saying, “I had to go past my lowest point in my life on my own terms.
“It took a couple of tries, but I like to think and hope I’m in a much better place now,” she said.
In December 2021, Gomez and Teefey established the online community Wondermind with the goal of providing a secure forum for people to discuss their issues with mental health.
