Lauri Markannen in Timberwolves uniform? Is it feasible? Does it make sense?
The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly showing interest in trading for forward Lauri Markkanen.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, who writes for Yahoo Sports, Minnesota is among the teams that have “shown interest” in the Utah sharpshooter. Fischer began his report by saying the Warriors, Kings and Spurs are “strong possible suitors” to trade for Markannen, while the Jazz, at the same time, are interested in re-signing Markkanen.
On ESPN’s “Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective” podcast, Windhorst noted Markkanen “is available on the trade market.”
“The Jazz have so far indicated to various parties around the NBA they would still like to renegotiate and extend Markkanen when the two sides become eligible to do so in August, sources said, and that listening to offers for Markkanen is just part of doing good business,” Fischer stated in his article.
In seven years with three teams, Markkanen, 27, has averaged 18.1 points and 7.3 rebounds. The Finn averaged 23.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2 assists, and nearly 1 steal per game with the Utah Jazz last year.
In 2022-2023, the stretch-forward scored 25.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, earning an All Star appearance and the NBA’s Most Improved Player award.
The Timberwolves selected Markkanen seventh overall in the 2017 NBA Draft, but they traded him to the Chicago Bulls the same night for Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn, Jimmy Butler, and Justin Patton.
Markkanen struggled early in his career to find his niche with the Bulls since the executive staff didn’t see him as a long-term player. He joined the Cavaliers in a three-team deal that sent Derrick Jones Jr. to the Bulls.
His stardom in Salt Lake City began after he was traded to the Jazz.
What the Timberwolves would trade for the Finn is unknown. Karl-Anthony Towns, a Timberwolves frontcourt player, could be traded to relieve the team’s financial load.
In the 2024-2025 season, which will be Markkanen’s final season under contract with the Jazz, Spotrac reports that he will earn slightly more than $18 million in gross compensation. Towns, on the other hand, has four years left on his contract, and he is scheduled to earn $49.2 million during the upcoming sporting season. In the year 2027-2028, which is his last year under contract with Minnesota, it will increase to a total of $61 million.
