Sony made the first move in the 9th generation console wars. Mark Cerny, the PS5’s lead system architect gave an exclusive interview to Wired magazine that listed several details regarding the console.

Since then, however, it’s Microsoft who has taken the lead on this one. They revealed the look of their upcoming console at the 2019 Game Awards ceremony. They’ve also released a steady stream of information about the Xbox Series X from then on.

Nothing But Silence Since Then

Sony, on the other hand, has been curiously quiet about the PS5. There are some hints here and there, but other than the logo reveal at CES 2020, we’ve heard nothing concrete. There were rumours that they were going to have a reveal event in February, then in early March, but so far, nothing.

Bizarre PS5 Leaks

This has meant that fans are latching onto any leaks they can get their hands on. Doesn’t matter whether it’s from a credible source or not, all that’s whetting their appetite is speculation. These leaks have officially crossed the barrier into the bizarre, with the latest information drop coming from NeoGAF.

This seemingly nonsensical image features a pigeon carrying a letter addressed to Mark Cerny. Underneath the image is a message that is equally as nonsensical, featuring a bunch of “cooing”.

Fans, for their part, figured out that this text is, in fact, a riddle that details the specs of the upcoming PS5. After deciphering this text, they concluded that it will have an 11.06 teraflop GPU with 52 compute units clocked at 1743 MHz each.

The letter addressed to Mark Cerny also has a postcode, hinting at the fact that the PS5 may have 16 GB GDDR6 RAM. A verified NeoGAF user shared this image, which is why it has some level of credibility.

An Image Of A New Prototype

Another leak comes to us from 4chan. This one states that the PS5 will have a 15.06 teraflop GPU, rather than an 11.06 teraflop GPU as the other leak states.

This leak would make the PS5 more powerful than the Xbox Series X’s 12 teraflop GPU. It also goes on to say that the PS5 will have 16 GB GDDR6 and 8 GB DDR4.

The 4chan leak also had a blurry image of a supposed PS5 prototype attached to it. This image shows a slim, rounded design, with a disc reader and two USB Type-C ports.

Right now, we should take all of this information with a grain of salt. It does seem consistent with what we’ve heard in the past. However, unless Sony breaks its silence and gives us some official information, nothing is certain.
