What’s the Plot of Outside (2024)?

In the midst of a zombie outbreak, the Abel family father Francis, mother Iris, and the young sons Joshua and Lucas take refuge inside a mansion on the family’s sugar cane farm owned by Francis’s parents. Francis then finds out that his father and a servant committed suicide from infection, while his mother is alive, now being a zombie, and which he must kill.

The family settles down, and tensions rise when Francis learns that Iris had been unfaithful to him and that her brother, Diego, is Joshua’s biological father. Francis teaches Joshua how to use a gun when he receives information over the radio about a safe zone, which attracts zombies. Diego comes to help, but Francis rejects him.

Francis becomes paranoid and locks up his family in the mansion and burns Diego’s map. After a soldier confirms that the zombie numbers outside are low, Joshua walks out in despair. Francis goes completely berserk and kills the soldier, locks Iris and Lucas in the basement.

Iris takes the opportunity to stab Francis and lock him up and tries to escape with Lucas. Meanwhile, Diego becomes a zombie and attacks them and bites Lucas. He manages to return back after hearing his family screaming, kills Diego but is shot later by Joshua who mistakes him as a zombie. In his last breath, Francis accepts Joshua as his son, and Joshua drives the van to rescue his mother and brother.

Why does Josh run away?

Francis, on reaching the farm, turns out to be very stern. He asks the family to stay at the farm. A short dialogue between Josh and Lucas reveals that Francis is especially harsh on Josh. It is soon discovered that Josh is actually Francis’ step-son. With Francis increasingly remaining indoors, Josh becomes more and more suppressed and eventually decides to leave.

A soldier comes to support the family and informs them that camp is approximately an hour and a half from where they are. He also says almost no zombie, between home and camp. Considering his state, Josh decides to go to camp and lets Iris know about his plan; he then decides to do it the very next day.

Why did Francis lock up Iris and Lucas?

Francis locked Iris and Lucas inside because he had extreme suspicion and paranoia against his family members. He thought that staying home was safe, and he feared that zombies might attack them if they went outside. Furthermore, he also did it due to the rising emotion and tension against his family, which aggravated his mental condition. This line of thinking from Francis made him even more controlling, hence locking Iris and Lucas.

What happens to Francis at the end?

There was nothing else to do but make a plan. Lucas was in a lot of pain and yelled very loudly. Just as Francis thought something bad had happened to him, he let down his guard and knelt down next to him in the basement. They got out of the basement after Iris attacked them from behind and locked them in.

Unfortunately, they had to face a zombie outside, and that made them run back into the house. Iris calls out for Francis as he fends off the zombies; unluckily, it is too late when Lucas gets bitten. Francis kills off the zombie, but already too late. Iris, a nurse, injects Lucas with a first aid and amputates his infected limb because it has to be healed at once.

She told Francis that Lucas needs to be taken to the hospital so Francis goes up in the bridge to get their car. There, she meets Josh. In the darkness, Josh mistakes Francis for a zombie and opens fire, killing Francis. As Francis dies, it is known that all this aside, Francis still viewed Josh as his son.

Outside (2024) Review

“Outside” is a movie about the different struggles a family goes through fighting to survive in the midst of a zombie outbreak. Fear, betrayal, and the weakness of family ties were all locked within this movie of interest. Francis turns out to be a would-be tyrant. He is also somewhat of a complex character, and his madness can sometimes be believable and pitiful.

The tension between him and Iris has made their relationship even deeper. This makes the fight for their lives even more intense. Details of their past in the film, particularly the revelation of Joshua’s true parentage, engaged the audience and carries the burden of emotion with it. The best part is the atmosphere that comes through with cinematography and sound design within this film, bringing you amidst chaos and despair. When it comes to action sequences, the tension scenes make you sit on the edge of your seat; special about human elements.

The film does not sit on horror or gore sequences; it goes deep into the emotional crises each character faces with their scary reality. The end is pretty heart touching, showing family love intricacy, even at their worst. Overall, “Outside” sends a very powerful message to the world, like we can fight for our loved ones even though the rest of the world is against us.
