Mr. Orrin Hatch is a retired United States Senator representing the state of Utah. He has served seven six-year terms in government since 1977, and his last term ended in 2018. With this, he becomes the longest-serving Senator from the Republican Party in American history, and he also becomes one of only two sitting U.S. Senators who were elected to the Senate during President Gerald Ford’s presidency.

Early Life and Education
Orrin Grant Hatch was born on the 22nd of March, 1934, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as the youngest of nine children to Helen Frances Hatch (née Kamm) and Jesse Hatch. He was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father was a metal lather, and as a result, his family was on a tight financial budget. Hatch grew up in poverty as a result of this; nonetheless, his desire to live a better life motivated him to become the first member of his family to enroll in college.
Hatch began his amateur boxing career while a student at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he competed in 11 matches over the course of two years. In 1959, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of California, Berkeley.
He promptly returned to school at the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a Juris Doctorate degree, which he received in 1962 after graduating. Hatch began working as an attorney in Pittsburgh nearly immediately after graduation, and he eventually relocated to Utah in 1969, where he continued to practice.
Orrin Hatch launched his first campaign for the United States Senate in 1976, taking on three-term Senator Frank Moss on the grounds that he had spent too much time in office and had lost touch with his people. Hatch was elected to the Senate in 1978 and served until his death in 2011. Hatch went on to defeat Moss in the election and has since been able to successfully hold his seat without facing any serious challenge from any other candidate.
While serving in the Senate, Hatch held positions such as Chairman of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (1981 to 1987), Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary (1993 to 2005), and Chairman of the Committee on Finance (2018). In 2000, he ran for the Republican presidential nomination but was defeated by then-Texas Governor and eventual general election victor George W.
Bush in a runoff election. As well as serving on the United States Supreme Court, he has expressed interest in serving on the court but has never been nominated for the job. When he was considered as a replacement for Lewis F. Powell Jr. during President Ronald Reagan’s administration, he came nothing close to receiving the nomination.
Orrin Hatch acted as the designated presidential successor during President Trump’s inaugural ceremony in 2017, at the request of the incoming president.

Orrin Hatch has been married for more than half a century, to be exact, since the 28th of August, 1957, when he proposed to his wife. That same year, the long-time congressman tied the knot with his long-term wife, Elaine Hansen, and the two have since had a life free of scandal.
Hatch took to social media in 2017 to commemorate his 60th wedding anniversary, tweeting a photo of him and his wife holding a balloon that read “60” along with a comment that characterized Elaine as his “beautiful companion.”
