At the SXSW premiere of his new film, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” he asked, “What was that line Jeremy Irons said in that movie?” “You’re an odd man,” someone comments to Jeremy in “Reversal of Fortune.” Cage continued, “And he looks back at him and replies, You have no idea how strange I am.

Perhaps the most intriguing actor of all time, dressed in a red and black plaid suit, admitted that casting himself as himself in a hilarious action comedy wasn’t a given. It was like a tightrope walker. The 58-year-old Las Vegan stated, “It was horrifying.” No part of my body advised me on how to portray any of my identities. That fact alone was enough to give me the willies.

Now, though, one of Hollywood’s most singular actors must face his greatest challenge: portraying Nicolas Cage. Three or four times, Cage declined the job till co-writer and director Tom Gormican wrote him a letter promising that the film would not be a caricature of Cage’s life but would, instead, add layers of “heart” to the story.

Cage told us that he has discussed making a sequel to Faceoff, but not a remake. It would have to be set after the events of the first movie. Cage was very candid about what he learned about Nicolas Cage for the role.

In his own words, the video “was more of an affirmation, a reaffirmation of one of my ideas that the exact thing you are terrified of is the very thing that one should move towards” (so long as you aren’t hurting yourself or someone else, of course). For the simple reason that you are likely to develop and acquire new knowledge.

And as a student of film acting, I can honestly say that I have never done anything like this before. “And I did learn from the experience. I learned that I can still use the same criteria that I need to develop a character in a movie. What that means is from the ridiculous to the sublime, it’s all by design. I can infuse it with heart and with imagination and genuine emotion I could also apply that criterion in playing myself in a movie. And that was a relief,” Cage remarked.
