Nick Cave formed his first band, The Birthday Party, in 1973 with boarding school pals Mick Harvey, Phill Calvert, John Cochivera, Brett Purcell, and Chris Coyne. Tracy Pew and Rowland S. Howard was eventually added to the lineup, and they were originally known as The Boys Next Door before changing their name to The Birthday Party in 1980. In 1983, the band disbanded.
