The National Football League, or NFL, is the biggest and oldest professional football league in the U.S. There are 32 teams in the NFL, which are split between the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). In 1920, it was decided that football should be seen as more professional if it was better organised and had clear rules. A league was made, which would become the NFL later on. Not many people paid attention to the NFL until 1925. A professional football game drew the biggest crowd ever on Thanksgiving Day in 1925. The Chicago Bears played against the Chicago Cardinals, but neither team scored.
Still, people were excited, and the NFL kept getting more and more popular. Just a few days later, when the Bears played the New York Giants on the road, nearly twice as many people came to watch as at the first record-setting game.
In 1941, almost 20 years after the NFL was founded, the first commissioner was chosen, and the president who had been in charge at the time stepped down. Elmer Layden was the man’s name. A decade later, people from coast to coast could watch the NFL Championship for the first time on TV.
After almost ten years, Pete Rozelle became the NFL’s Commissioner. Also, the American Football League (AFL) showed up. The AFL joined the NFL after the 1969 season.
When the World Football League (WFL) was announced in 1973, the NFL found out that it could once again have some competition. But there was no reason to be worried about what happened. After just two years, the WFL went out of business.
For the tenth year in a row, the Super Bowl was the most watched sports event ever, and for the tenth year in a row, the Super Bowl was the most watched live event on TV the following year. There was no doubt that the NFL had forever changed what people watched on TV on Sundays, Monday nights, and for a week in January.
