Midsommar: Every Pagan And Swedish Symbolism Explained

There are some movies which are not just a movie. These movies create a great impact on people’s life. And when these films are based on true events, it becomes something else. “Midsommar” is such a type of film. This film portrays a Swedish traditional event that has some meaningful symbols. Fans need to know about this symbolism.

This is a horror folk film of 2019. Ari Aster wrote and directed the film. It is a result of co-production between Sweden and the United States. The film becomes a straightforward slasher movie among Swedish Cultists. Midsommar was released in the United States on 3rd July and in Sweden on 10th July 2019. The film earned $48million in the box office.

Plot Of The Film

In the movie, Dani, a college student, have an impact on her relationship with her boyfriend Christian after Dani’s sister’s death. Meanwhile Christian and his two friends received an invitation to join the Midsommar event in Sweden from a Swedish friend. The group went to Sweden to join the event. But there they go enormous horrific and mysterious events that made their lives utterly different.

Explanation Of Pagan And Swedish Symbolism

Though the film is horrifying, but the writer shows a true cultural Pagan rituals of a Swedish cult, called “Harga”.  There are many symbolization in the film. Harga means a group of people who danced until the death. That’s why in the Dani danced until everyone dropped, and crowned as May Queen. The symbols in the barns celebrate the solstices, faith in Gods. When Christian sacrificed himself, he wore a symbol of the upward facing arrow and his death reflects the Norse God Tyr’s death.

The most important symbol of the Pagan ritual was the sex scene between Christian and Maja. In the midsummer tradition, it involves son much drinking and joy which led them to often sex. This incident causes a large number of childbirths after 9 month of the festival. However, these symbols and events made the movie more haunting and mysterious though.
