During the summer of this year, the universe of Pixar’s popular Toy Story franchise will become even larger. The upcoming film Lightyear will depict the story of the real-life astronaut Buzz Lightyear, who served as the inspiration for the franchise’s iconic toy space ranger, Space Ranger Sam. The picture is currently scheduled to hit theatres on June 17, 2022, according to current plans.
Director Angus MacLane stated in an interview with Fandango that he was an avid admirer of science fiction and that recreating the origin tale of Buzz Lightyear would provide him with an opportunity to explore a science fiction plot. “Can you tell me the name of the movie that Andy viewed when we were making Toy Story?” MacLane wondered aloud, alluding to the sci-fi picture set within the universe that served as inspiration for the franchise’s toy Buzz Lightyear.
With the release of the current Lightyear trailer, we now have some useful storyline information regarding what audiences can expect from the origin story of their favorite space ranger. With that in mind, let’s take a look at all we know about the actors, the plot, the release date, and everything else that will be revealed before the film’s theatrical premiere this summer.
Lightyear Release Date?
Lightyear is scheduled to be released on June 17, 2022, three months after another Pixar feature, Turning Red, which will be released three months after Lightyear.
Despite the fact that we’ve only seen a small portion of what Lightyear has to offer, the fact that it looks this fantastic is a testament to how much time and effort the entire team put into making this film, even if they weren’t constantly working in the same spot.
What is certain is that the success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings at the box office has encouraged Disney to provide theater-only releases to many of their movies in 2021, and presumably everything after that.
Unfortunately, after Disney revealed that Turning Red would be the third Pixar film in a row to premiere exclusively on Disney+ at no additional cost, the prospects of Lightyear obtaining a regular theatrical release decreased significantly. Considering that Lightyear is already based on an established IP, it appears doubtful that the film would face the same fate, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
Lightyear Cast
Fans of the Toy Story film franchise are well aware that Tim Allen has provided the voice of the iconic space ranger since the first film in the series was released in 1995. Allen, on the other hand, will not be repeating his part in this movie. Instead, Chris Evans will be taking over the role of Buzz Lightyear in the next film Toy Story 3.
Evans expressed his excitement for the job in a tweet from October 2021, stating, “I’m looking forward to it.” “I spent a significant amount of my childhood watching animated movies [sic]. They served as a getaway for me. This is the story of my travels. My aspirations. They opened my eyes to the wonders of storytelling and performing for the first time. ‘Thank you doesn’t even come close to expressing my gratitude.”
At this time, no members of the Toy Story franchise have been confirmed to make an appearance in the next feature film. Taika Waititi and Keke Palmer will play Izzy Hawthorne and Alicia Hawthorne, respectively.
Efren Ramirez will play Diaz, Dale Soules will play Steel, Isiah Whitlock, Jr. will play Burnside, and Efren Ramirez will play Diaz and Efren Ramirez will play Diaz (Morrison). Peter Sohn, a long-time Pixar director, and animator will give the voice of Buzz’s robot cat buddy Sox in the film.
Lightyear Plot
During the course of the film’s plot, audiences will learn about the astronaut Buzz Lightyear, who served as the inspiration for the in-universe space ranger of the same name. From the trailer, we can get a sense of what kind of adventures we might be in for with the legendary Lightyear character.

We already know that Buzz will be stranded on a foreign planet as a result of his involvement with Star Command, which fans may remember from the Toy Story movies. Everything Else
This isn’t the first time that Pixar has looked into the character’s genesis tale, as previously reported. After the toy’s release, Pixar produced the television series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, which was also based on the real astronaut who served as inspiration for the toy.
That film, on the other hand, was less concerned with the origins and more concerned with what transpired when Buzz became heavily involved with Star Command.
The television series that inspired the item, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, is regarded canon inside the Product Story universe, and the toy itself is considered canon. It remains to be seen how the new Lightyear film will cope with the previous cartoon series, which was produced by Disney.
Fans may expect a distinct tone from the rest of the Toy Story films, with Lightyear focusing a stronger emphasis on science fiction and action/adventure than the others. However, given that it is a Pixar film, we have no doubt that it will have the same heart and passion for deep, fascinating storytelling that the company has been known for over the years.
In any case, Lightyear is set to depict the story of one of Pixar’s most adored and famous characters, which is a promising start. Hopefully, fans of the Toy Narrative franchise will find the film to be a worthy origin story for Buzz Lightyear, as they did with the first film.
Due to the fact that so many aspects remain undisclosed, fans will have to wait until the film’s release to find out if it lives up to the excitement and if it will take them beyond infinity and beyond.
