It was long before the success of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black series that Laverne Cox established a successful career in the entertainment industry. However, despite the fact that she is best known for her role as Sophia in the drama series, she first came to public attention in 2008 while appearing on the VH1 reality series I Want to Work For Diddy.

Cox began her recurring role as Sophia Burset, a trans woman imprisoned for credit-card fraud, in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black in 2013. She stated at the time, “Sophia is written as a multidimensional character with whom the audience can truly empathize—they’re suddenly empathizing with a real Trans person. And it’s especially important for Trans people who need to see representations of people who look like them and their experiences.” Cox’s role in Orange Is the New Black gives her a platform to advocate for transgender rights.
Cox appeared on Katie Couric’s syndicated show, Katie, in January 2014, alongside trans woman Carmen Carrera. Couric referred to transgender people as “transgenders,” and after being rebuffed by Carrera about her surgeries, specifically what genital reconstruction she had undergone, she turned the question to Cox. Growing up in Mobile, Alabama, Cox was reared by a single mother alongside her twin brother, who was also raised by the same mother. Cox has progressed significantly since then. It took a decade before her professional career began to take off. In 2014, the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association (GLECA) presented her with the Rising Star Award. No matter how bad the separation was, Cox and the CEO of Mateo Sound looked to have reached a mutually agreeable conclusion to their relationship. As Cox noted, ‘we are aware of how much our relationship means to so many others, particularly transgender persons, in terms of giving them hope that this type of love is attainable for them as well.’ As a result of this break, “that hope and that love have not been extinguished, but have instead been strengthened,” according to the author.

According to reports, the Orange Is the New Black actress has found love again after a brief hiatus. When asked about the matter during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she expressed her views, saying:

The thought of falling in love with someone is terrible, but I’m in love with love. When my previous relationship came to an end, I was heartbroken and distressed. “It’s wonderful that you can fall in love again, that you can heal from your loss over time, and then move on to something else that is an even better situation for me and that is much more fulfilling.”

However, this time around, for a variety of reasons, I’m not sure I want to walk down that particular path.
