The author was diagnosed with leukaemia for the second time in February, prompting the author and his longtime partner to tie the wedding.

It was a secret wedding for the Grammy winner, 35, and his girlfriend, Suleika Jaouad, in February. Author Jaouad told CBS Sunday Morning that the couple wanted to get married after she was diagnosed with leukaemia for the second time.

“We got married the day before I was admitted to the hospital to undergo my bone marrow transplant,” she told the outlet.

“We have known that we wanted to get married, I think, from the first week that we started dating. That’s when Jon first brought up the topic of marriage to me. So, we’ve had eight years,” Jaouad joked. “This is not, you know, a hasty decision!”

However, despite the fact that the pair had already been married before her bone marrow transplant, Jaouad (33), maintained that Batiste’s decision to propose to her was not influenced by her condition in any way.

“He said to me, ‘I just want to be very clear, I’m not proposing to you because of this diagnosis. It’s taken me a year to design your ring. So, just know this timing has nothing to do with it. But what I do want you to know is that this diagnosis doesn’t change anything. It just makes it all the clearer to me that I want to commit to this and for us to be together,'” Jaouad told CBS. “But once we realized we had this tiny window before the bone marrow transplant, we decided to go for it.”

For their “small” and “ideal” wedding, Batiste and Jaouad used “bread ties” instead of wedding rings and were able to receive their marriage licence fast.

“And I’ll tell you, we walked into that bone marrow transplant unit on cloud nine,” Jaouad added. “We were so happy, so brimming with love and positivity from this beautiful evening that we’d had. And I really believe that that carried us through.”

According to the musician, he revealed how he came up with the concept for his album, We Are, and how his song “Show Me the Way” is a representation of his connection with Jaouad.

In Batiste’s words at the time, “It represents a lot of my childhood and also our connection.” That bit of our relationship has been chopped off and put into the album, and it’s a great thing to have.”

Batiste took home five trophies at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, including best music video and album of the year, after collecting a record-breaking 11 nominations for the night.

When Batiste was asked about the “duality” of the moment following his triumphs in the press room, he responded by referring to his own predicament.

“It puts it in perspective. Life has ups and downs. And sometimes the ups and downs occur at the same time,” he said. “And when you have that happening, it really lets you know by shaking your consciousness and saying, ‘Be present. Be here.’ So what’s going on back home and what’s happening today are both in their proper place for me.”

The 64th Annual Grammy Awards, which will be presented by Trevor Noah and broadcast and streamed live on Sunday from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, will be broadcast and streamed on CBS.

The couple, who have been together for eight years, made the decision to be married when she was recently diagnosed with leukaemia for the second time. They have two children. In an interview with correspondent Jim Axelrod, she explained that she and her husband were married the day before she was brought to the hospital for her bone marrow transplant.

“We’ve known that we wanted to be married, I believe, since the first week that we started dating. I’m not sure when it became official. That was the first time Jon brought up the subject of marriage with me. So we’ve been together for eight years. I’m not making this decision on the spur of the moment, you understand?” She burst out laughing.

Because of the suddenness of the “small, beautiful, little ceremony,” Jaouad explained that they were unable to exchange traditional wedding rings. “We made use of bread ties,” she explained.

Batiste stated that the whirlwind ceremony “would not disrupt our agenda.” This is merely a stumbling block.”

“And something like marriage may be an act of optimism, a declaration, a statement that ‘We have a future,'” Axelrod explained.

“Yes. It is a defiant act. The darkness will want to swallow you up, but simply turn on the light. Concentrate on the light. Keep your eyes on the light.”

Jaouad stated that after she received her diagnosis, Batiste disclosed that he had been planning to propose for months. “He stated plainly to me, ‘I am not proposing to you as a result of this diagnosis.

Your ring took me a year to design. Therefore, keep in mind that the timing has nothing to do with it. However, what I want you to understand is that this diagnosis makes no difference. This only reinforces my desire to commit to this and for us to be together.’ However, once we learned we had this small window of opportunity prior to the bone marrow transplant, we decided to take it.

“And, due to a friend, we were able to obtain a marriage licence at the last minute, when I was in the operating room had a catheter inserted into my chest. And that was ridiculous! There were nurses and surgeons present. This was our computer. I was dressed in hospital gowns. However, we made it a reality. And that evening, we went shopping for our wedding attire together, at the last minute, with loads of fun. However, it was not at all what we had envisioned. Perhaps four persons were present. It was a private event. It was minuscule. And it was flawless.”

“And believe me when I say that we entered that bone marrow transplant unit on cloud nine,” Jaouad explained. “We were overjoyed, overflowing with love and positivity following this lovely evening. And I truly believe that is what sustained us. That sense of belonging, that sense of love, that sense of joy and spontaneity were all very critical.”
