Jim Larrañaga is a college basketball coach and the head coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball team since 2011. He was born on October 2, 1949 and grew up in the Parkchester section of the Bronx in New York City. He went to Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens, where he began on the varsity basketball team under coach Jack Curran and graduated in 1967.
He attended college basketball at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island, where he was the team captain as a senior in the 1970–71 season and led the Friars to a 20–8 record and graduate with fifth-highest scorer with 1,258 career points. He graduated from Providence in 1971 and was selected in the sixth round of the 1971 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons.
He decided to leave the Pistons’ rookie camp in order to take a coaching position at Davidson College.
