“I’m not going to decline the opportunity to arm wrestle an Olympian at the Olympics,” Kelce remarked, considering the viral moment.
Reflecting on his time at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Jason Kelce talked about his arm wrestling encounter with Nicole Heavirland, a prominent player for Team USA in women’s rugby, which went viral.
On the most recent episode of the podcast Green Light with Chris Long, 36-year-old Kelce gave an explanation for his initial reluctance to challenge the 29-year-old fellow athlete.
“Dude, I hate saying yes to arm wrestling. Especially when it’s always somebody that’s smaller than you because it’s like a losing situation,” said Kelce. “Like if I win, it’s like, ‘Oh, look at the big guy picking on the smaller person.’ “
Nonetheless, the former NFL player decided to accept the challenge in the Olympic spirit.
Nicole Heavirland posted a video on Instagram with caption: “@jason.kelce holding on to that table a little bit? 🤣.”
Jason Kelce commented on the post: “Holding onto something with your off hand is completely within the rules of the International federation of Arm Wrestling”
“I’m at the Olympics, obviously. And [Nicole is] like, ‘Do you want to arm wrestle?’ I’m like, alright, I’m not going to turn down arm wrestling an Olympian at the Olympics,” he said.
Funny enough, Kylie Kelce, the wife of the former Philadelphia Eagles star who went with him on the vacation, joked on the video, saying, “I tried to warn you!”
He playfully defended himself by adding, “Holding onto something with your off hand is completely within the rules of the International federation of Arm Wrestling.”
The Kelces also met Kate Zackary, Kristen Thomas, Meya Bizer, Kasey McCravey, and other members of the USA Rugby squad when they were in Paris.
In a humorous TikTok video, celebrity rugby player Ilona Maher even dubbed Jason the unofficial mascot of Team USA women’s rugby. Later, he wore a button-up shirt in red, white, and blue with different pictures of Maher’s face on it as a way of expressing his gratitude for the new title.
Jason gave an explanation of his and Kylie’s decision to make the most of their time at the Olympics in an interview with the Associated Press.
“When we found out that we were going to have an opportunity to go to this, the more we thought about it, we were like, ‘Let’s take advantage of it now that we can actually do it,’ ” he said.
“We love sports, we love competition, we love world events. This is such a unique place where the entire world gets to come together and bond over competition and sports,” he continued.
