Who Is Ian Thorpe?

Australian swimmer Ian James Thorpe, AM (born 13 October 1982), is a retired freestyle expert who also competed in backstroke and the solo medley. Together with compatriot swimmer Emma McKeon, he has the most Olympic gold medal victories of any Australian with five. Thorpe was the most successful athlete at the Sydney, Australia 2000 Summer Olympics, winning three gold and two silver medals.

With his victory in the 400-meter freestyle at the 1998 Perth World Championships, Thorpe became the youngest male representative of Australia at the age of 14. He also holds the record for being the youngest individual male World Champion.

Following that triumph, Thorpe dominated the 400 m freestyle, winning it at every swimming championship, including the Olympic, World, Commonwealth, and Pan Pacific ones, until his break following the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

He made history by becoming the first individual to ever win six gold medals at a single World Championship in swimming in 2001. Thorpe led the Australian relay teams and set five relay world records in addition swimming 13 individual long-course world records. He won the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 m freestyle relays in Sydney.

He was the only guy to have earned medals in the 100-200-400 combination thanks to his victories in the 200 and 400 metres as well as his bronze in the 100 m freestyle at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Channing and Thorpe parted ways in June 2019. Later, in May 2022, Channing passed away in Bali, Indonesia.
