Who Exactly Is Don Lemon?

Don Lemon is an American television journalist best known for serving as a host on CNN. He was born on March 1, 1966. In his early career as a journalist, Lemon hosted weekend news programmes on regional television stations in Alabama and Pennsylvania. For NBC, Lemon served as a news correspondent for shows like Today and NBC Nightly News.

He began working for CNN in 2006 as a correspondent and went on to become well-known as the host of Don Lemon Tonight from 2014 to 2022. He presently co-hosts CNN This Morning with Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins. Lemon has also won three regional Emmy Awards, an Edward R. Murrow Award, and a national Emmy Award.

The Early Life of Don Lemon

The son of Wilmon Lee Richardson and Katherine Marie (Bouligney) Richardson, Lemon was born on March 1st, 1966 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His father was a well-known lawyer who participated in a case that successfully contested Baton Rouge’s segregated public transit system. Lemon learned that Wilmon was his father when he was five years old.

Lemon was born with the last name of his mother’s first spouse. His maternal grandmother was the child of a black mother and a white father who had French and Scots-Irish ancestry; he is primarily of African American and Creole descent. He went to Baker High School, a public high school in the East Baton Rouge Parish community of Baker. When Lemon was a senior, he was elected class president.

Lemon voted Republican and for Ronald Reagan while attending Louisiana State University. At the age of 30, he later earned a broadcast journalism degree from Brooklyn College. He worked for WNYW as a Brooklyn College intern. He spent several years working as a correspondent for NBC affiliates in Philadelphia and Chicago as well as Fox affiliates in St. Louis and Chicago.

Lemon received more accolades for his coverage of Hurricane Katrina and an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2002 for his reporting on the capture of the D.C. area shooter. He won three Chicago / Midwest Emmy Awards in 2006 while working as a reporter for WMAQ-TV in Chicago; one for a business story about Craigslist real estate listings, “Living on Craigslist,” and two for reporting on the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa, “Travel to Africa.”

In 2009, Ebony magazine selected Lemon as one of the 150 most significant African Americans. Lemon was named one of The Advocate’s 50 Most Important LGBTQ Persons in Media in 2014.

Lemon received the Native Son Award in December 2016, which was created to “promote the growing visibility and effect of black gay men in society” and is named after James Baldwin’s 1955 book Notes of a Native Son. He was included on the Power 50 list of “the most important LGBTQ people in the States” published by Out in 2017.

He was recognized as one of the Pride50 in June 2019 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village, New York, which are widely seen as a turning point in the modern LGBTQ rights movement. These individuals “actively assure society stays progressing towards equality, acceptance, and decency for all gay people” were described by Queerty as “trailblazing individuals.”

Lemon has a property in Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York, and a residence in Harlem, New York.

In a September 2010 radio interview with congregation members of Bishop Eddie Long, Lemon talked about being sexually assaulted when he was five or six by a teenage neighbor and how he did not tell his mother about it until he was thirty.

He reported the event to the police after receiving death threats in October 2017 that included racial remarks.
