Ross made the decision to enlist in the U.S. Navy in order to be eligible for the G.I. Bill after having her parents sign a waiver allowing her to do so as a child. Prior to being assigned to Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Ross first relocated to Rochester, New York. After serving for six months, she requested and was given a “uncharacterized” discharge under the then-in-effect “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy as a result of harassment from enlisted males who forced her to come out as gay.

Ross returned home and made friends with a drag performer named Traci Ross, who at the age of 19 assisted her in starting her gender change. After her mother kicked her out for being transgender, Ross moved home with her real father in Roanoke, Virginia, who was a little more supportive of her.

Ross and her parents were once estranged, but according to her, their connection has since been repaired. Ross worked as a waitress at Applebee’s for the six years she resided in Roanoke in order to make enough money to cover her rent and go to beauty school. Due to discrimination, she was fired from her waitress position.

After that, Ross relocated to Hollywood, Florida, where he worked until 2003 as a model, escort, and web manager. She created a graphic design and web development company and enrolled in acting training. Later, she relocated to Chicago where she worked as the Trans Life Center’s job coordinator.
