After serving for six months, she requested and was given a “uncharacterized” discharge under the then-in-effect “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy as a result of harassment from enlisted males who forced her to come out as gay.
Ross returned home and made friends with a drag performer named Traci Ross, who at the age of 19 assisted her in starting her gender change. After her mother kicked her out for being transgender, Ross moved home with her real father in Roanoke, Virginia, who was a little more supportive of her.
Ross and her parents were once estranged, but according to her, their connection has since been repaired. Ross worked as a waitress at Applebee’s for the six years she resided in Roanoke in order to make enough money to cover her rent and go to beauty school.
