Hard Cell Plot
In Hard Cell, Catherine Tate manages to strike a balance between levity and the exploration of critical issues surrounding the prison system. Hard Cell is a documentary-style comedy set in a fictional female jail, HMP Woldsley, that is set in the 1970s.
I am a writer and a creative. Several roles (see character list below) are played by Catherine, including Laura Willis, the Governor who believes that creativity leads to rehabilitation, and Big Viv, the psychopath who has had a long life. This six-week drama follows the inmates as they prepare for a musical production produced by Cheryl Fergison, formerly of the EastEnders.
Rehearsals bring together a diverse group of women who are discovering their own voices, gaining confidence, and strengthening their bonds as they work together. Hard Cell is a funny and unexpectedly emotional film that delves into the hilarious reality of prison life.
As defined by the show's producers, the plot revolves around “a documentary team following inmates and employees at HMP Woldsley, catching the penal system at its most cruel and hilarious.”

In the meantime, executive producer Kristian Smith has this to say: “We are extremely excited to be able to show people the inside of HMP Woldsley, our imaginary jail inhabited by the brilliant inventions of Catherine Tate when it premieres on Netflix. This series is both humorous and heartbreaking at the same time since it depicts what life may be like in a female correctional facility in the United Kingdom.”
Hard Cell Characters Played by Catherine Tate
The governor of HMP Woldsley is Laura Willis (see bio below). She is a self-described prison reformer who believes that staging musicals will provide a platform for her idea that creativity leads to rehabilitation in prison. The term “bleeding heart liberal in kitten heels” would be used to describe her by her adversaries, which she would accept without a qualm.
Ros is a popular and lively inmate who looks up to her mother as a role model. She adores her prison wife Suds, and she claims to like her penpal boyfriend Sebastian, but in reality, she is washing him for all he's worth in the process. What? It is not her fault that people have such a high level of faith in her.
Ange is a nervous first-time prisoner who is apprehensive about everything. An innocent, attempting to adjust to her new surroundings, her humility makes her easy prey for those who would take advantage of her. Her motto is “People are inherently nice,” and despite her misfortune, she overcomes her worries, becomes used to her new surroundings, and even discovers her jail walk.
Big Viv (see photo below) is a scary figure that is dreaded by both inmates and captives. She's violent, unpredictable, and her happy place is in her singing – everything you'd want in a cellmate. Vivienne is a die-hard fan of the Kardashians, with whom she has a strong emotional bond, and she discovers a passion for theatre when she becomes involved with the musical.
Marco (as depicted above) is an Essex-based jail guard. He's made it down to the final 32 on Love Island, so he doesn't have anything to prove. He is more concerned with his appearance than he is with his job, which he only accepted since it allows him to go to work without changing tubes.
Ros' mother is named Anne Marie. A nasty, mean, ex-con who pays visits to her daughter whenever she is in financial difficulty. She takes full advantage of her daughter's unconditional affection, which she treats with contempt and scorn.
