The professional musician, singer-songwriter, and guitarist passed away on May 1, 2023, at the age of 84. He died in his hometown Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The sources collected that he was facing some health-related issues at that time. And due to ongoing health issues, he even canceled his flight and tours to US and Canada.

He faced several ailments prior to this also. In the fall of the year 2002, he suffered from a stomach aneurysm and endured several problems created by it.

Thereafter, he underwent vascular surgery at Hamilton’s McMaster Medical Centre. An operation was also performed when Gordon was in a six-week coma and experienced a tracheotomy in 2003.

Gordon Lightfoot, the successful guitarist had faced several health issues in his early life also. He was operated on many times and underwent surgery. Even in 2006, his health deteriorated because of a minor stroke, which left his middle and ring fingers in a state of paralysis. But later, his parts gained back their mobility.

At present also, he was suffering from an undisclosed illness due to which he canceled his tours also. The autopsy report stated that he died a natural death.

The news of his death was shared by Billboard also in a statement, “If You Could Read My Mind” hitmaker passed away Monday at the age of 84 at a hospital in Toronto.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm that Gordon Meredith Lightfoot has passed away. Gordon died peacefully on Monday, May 1, 2023, at 730 p.m. at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto,” the statement read on Crooner’s Facebook page.

Tributes Paid to Gordon Lightfoot

Owing to his death, several friends, and colleagues of him paid him tribute by sharing some words on his contribution to the music industry.

The world lost “one of the greatest singer-songwriters” as stated by Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.

Bryan Adams, Stephen King, Belinda Carlisle, and Brian Wilson also shared their tribute statements.

Lightfoot started his career in the 1960s and continuously released several hit songs, including “Sundown,” “Carefree Highway,” and “If You Could Read My Mind.” His notable career led him to win 13 Juno awards and four Grammy awards.
