Plot of For All Mankind: Season 3
The Season 2 finale concludes with a shot of an astronaut’s boot on the Martian surface. Is it one of NASA’s astronauts? A cosmonaut from the Soviet Union? Someone from another country? We have no idea. At the conclusion of Season 2, it is revealed that Sergei (Piotr Adamczyk) is faking at least some of his feelings for Margo and is instead attempting to use her to extract NASA secrets for the USSR.
It’s uncertain whether this narrative detail crosses over into the 1994 timeframe. In our chronology, the USSR disintegrated in 1989. But, in this version of 1994, will that be the case? Will the Soviet Union still exist in the “For All Mankind” alternative 1990s?
We don’t know much about For All Mankind’s Season 3 narrative other than Mars and the probable subplot with Margo being spied on. In an interview with Inverse, Ron Moore stated that the aim continued far into the nineties.
Moore also stated that “these things are fluid and organic,” meaning the show may continue to run long beyond Season 3, or Season 3 could end up being the final season for the show. It all depends on what happens with those boots on Mars and what’s actually going on in this bizarro version of 1994.

Cast of For All Mankind: Season 3
The first season took place in the 1970s. Whereas the second was in the 1980s, with many of the same cast members as the astronauts.
However, with the third season presumably shifting to the 1990s, it appears that a new cast of younger astronauts will be required to replace the older faces who will not be joining these adventures.
We are most likely going to see the return of:
- Joel Kinnaman as Ed Baldwin
- Shantel VanSanten as Karen Baldwin
- Jodi Balfour as Ellen Wilson
- Wrenn Schmidt as Margo Madison
There’s also a possibility that the following characters will return, although they’ll be older due to the time jump:
- Coral Peña as Aleida Rosales
- Casey W. Johnson as Danny Stevens
- Cynthy Wu as Kelly Baldwin
It will also be tough to resurrect Michael Dorman and Sarah Jones. While this is an alternate reality, it is not a fantasy. Because the two characters sacrificed themselves in Season 2 of “For All Mankind,” we shouldn’t expect to see them again in Season 3 unless it’s through flashbacks.
