Finneas has Irish and Scottish ancestry, and he was born there. A songwriting class with his mother took place in 2010, and at 12 years old, he took it. He wrote and produced songs for the first time then.
Finneas Career
Finneas has stated that his previous experience as a character has aided him in creating songs for his sister Billie Eilish, as he writes from her perspective and for her range of vocal ability. “Being able to listen to an artist and copy them has been a significant part of my career as a producer and co-writer,” he explained. “I want to write a song that I think she’ll relate to and enjoy singing and empathise with the lyrics and make her own,” he says of writing for his sister, and when he writes with her, he tries to “help her tell whatever story she’s trying to tell, bounce ideas off of her, listen to her ideas” when he writes with her.
When writing, if you know that someone else’s voice is going to be the one telling the story, you should write in a language that is appropriate for them, just as you would when writing for other artists…. I try to match whatever I’m helping them make to the person they appear to be, because everyone has a unique vocabulary and way of putting sentences together.
The easiest way to determine if a song was written by someone is if it doesn’t fit their vernacular. Asking an artist how they feel about something is also a big part of this… It doesn’t matter how much an artist likes your line and says, “That’s a really cool line,” it’s still not a good fit for you to wear it because it’s not comfortable. ‘Is that something you’d feel comfortable singing every time you hear it?’
When Eilish’s dance teacher requested them to make a song for a choreography, Finneas gave her his song “Ocean Eyes,” which he had written and produced for his band. There were a lot of positive reviews of the song on SoundCloud once it was released. A conversation regarding Eilish’s potential began when Finneas’ management contacted him in November of last year. Eilish signed to Platoon with the support of Finneas.
His work on Eilish’s debut EP Don’t Smile at Me (2017), which peaked at No. 14 on the US Billboard 200, has been widely praised. ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ (2019), Eilish’s debut studio album, was co-written and produced by Finneas, and debuted at the top of the US and UK charts. When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? was named Album of the Year and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, and he won the 2020 Grammy Awards for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. Other honours include Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Eilish’s “Bad Guy.”
Additionally, the Grammy-winning Coutinho twins have worked with him in the past.
Selena Gomez’s “Lose You to Love Me,” which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and Camila Cabello’s “Romance” were both produced by him.
Ashe’s “Moral of the Story” and John Legend’s unreleased song were both produced by him. The Fallout’s soundtrack was composed by O’Connell.
