During the 2024 Oscars, Emma Stone had a small wardrobe mishap while winning the Best Actress prize.
Stone gestured to the zipper on the back of her dress as she entered the stage. Stone won for her performance as Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. She announced to the crowd, “My dress is broken!” and presenters Michelle Yeoh, Jessica Lange, Sally Field, Jennifer Lawrence, and Charlize Theron hurried to assist her.

Stone made a joke about how she probably ripped it when she was belting out a song earlier in the evening with Ryan Gosling. “I believe it took place during ‘I’m Just Ken,'” she clarified. “I think I am.”
The 35-year-old actress defeated candidates Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall, Annette Bening for Nyad, and Carey Mulligan for Maestro. Stone praised her fellow nominees during her remarks, saying, “I’m in awe of you.” We’ve had such an honor working on this together. I hope our activities together expand.
With tears in her eyes, Stone thanked Lanthimos and the whole cast and crew of Poor Things as she concluded her remarks.
“I was panicking the other night—as you can kind of see, that happens a lot—that something like this might actually happen,” Stone said. “Yorgos asked me to please get away from it. He is correct, though: It isn’t about me.
It’s the story of a group that united to create something more powerful than the sum of its individual members. Making movies is the finest because it brings us all together. It gives me great pleasure to share this with everyone of the actors, crew, and individuals who contributed their love, passion, and creativity to the creation of the movie.
Stone then exclaimed, “Don’t look at the back of my dress!” as she turned to leave the stage.
After winning, Stone told reporters backstage that she most likely popped a zipper while belting out a song with her La La Land co-star Ryan Gosling.
“They sewed me back in right when I came back, which was wonderful,” Stone said. “I genuinely believe that during ‘I’m Just Ken,’ I killed it. That number really blew my mind, and I was in complete awe of Ryan and what he was accomplishing. I was simply going for it when he was right there, but things happen.”
