The reason for Zac Efron’s recent hospitalization as a result of a swimming accident has been disclosed.
During the weekend, the 36-year-old actor was on vacation at a villa in Ibiza, Spain, when he joined companions for a swim in the pool. Sources verified to PEOPLE that he experienced a “minor swimming incident” while there.
A source verified on Monday, Aug. 5, that Efron ingested water into his lungs when his chest struck the bottom of the pool after his plunge. The news was initially reported by TMZ.

The source also states that the High School Musical alum was briefly disoriented and was subsequently transported to a hospital as a precautionary measure.
He was subsequently subjected to thoracic X-rays to confirm that no water remained in his airways, the source continues. Despite the fact that the former Disney star was medically cleared within hours, he elected to remain at the hospital until the paparazzi who had accompanied him to the facility departed.
“He is fine,” Efron’s rep later told on Saturday, Aug. 3.
After the incident, the Iron Claw star also shared a message with his supporters, reassuring them that everything was fine.
“Happy and healthy,” Efron wrote next to a picture of himself lifting weights outdoors while lying on his back, balancing on top of an exercise ball.
“Thanks for the well wishes,” the movie star added to his Instagram Stories on Sunday, Aug. 4.
The 17 Again actor made an onstage appearance for guests at the Ushuaïa Ibiza Hotel and Beach Club during his vacation last week, where he performed alongside DJ Martin Garrix.
Garrix, 28, recorded and uploaded a video of the enjoyable moment to TikTok. The footage depicted both entertainers performing.
It is currently believed that Efron has returned to the United States.
The actor is costarring in his most recent film, A Family Affair, alongside Nicole Kidman and Joey King. In June, Netflix introduced the romantic comedy.
Next, Efron is scheduled to appear in the thriller Famous and a remake of the 1987 comedy Three Men and a Baby for Disney+. Both are presently in the preproduction phase.
