Chirinos competed in five Olympic Games from 1992 to 2012
Fox Sports and Spanish newspaper ABC have reported that former Olympic cyclist Daniela Larreal Chirinos is deceased after she choked on food in her Las Vegas condominium. She was fifty years old.
According to a Fox Sports report that was translated from Spanish, the Venezuelan athlete was reported missing by her colleagues at a Las Vegas hotel on Monday, Aug. 12, after she failed to report to work. Police discovered her body in her apartment on Friday, Aug. 16.
Fox Sports reported that the police “concluded that the cause of death had been asphyxiation caused by solid food remains found in her trachea,” despite the fact that the Clark County Coroner’s Office has yet to provide an official cause of death for Chirinosos.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Clark County Coroner’s Office were contacted by individuals seeking information regarding Chirinos’ passing.
On August 16, the Venezuela Olympic Committee published a tribute to Chirinosos on X (formerly Twitter).
“The COV Board of Directors regrets the departure of Daniela Larreal,” a translation of the statement read. “With an outstanding career in track cycling, he managed to represent us with honour in five Olympic Games, accumulate four Olympic diplomas and triumphs that always filled us with great pride.”
The post featured a photograph of Chirinosos holding a medal with her eyes closed and a flag draped around her shoulders.
She was a five-time Olympian, having competed in Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004, and London in 2012.
She was one of the most distinguished cyclists in her country. Her highest finish was seventh in the Team Sprint final event in London. Additionally, she was awarded a gold medal at the Pan American Games and the Pan American Championships.
