Viggo Mortensen, sex, violence, and a new Cronenberg film are all in the works.

Prepare to be terrified and brace yourself, for David Cronenberg has returned. The Fly, Scanners, and Videodrome are just a few examples of the innovative, thought-provoking, and downright revolting movies that he was responsible for producing in the 1980s. The name Cronenberg came to be associated with gore, genius, and horrifying depictions of the human body. In his earlier works, he frequently questioned humanity’s connection to technology as well as our own relationship to it via the lens of sex and violence.

Later in his career, he moved away from the science fiction genre and began delivering drama in a way that only David Cronenberg could. The list is too extensive to finish; some of the movies on it include Dead Ringers, Crash, A History of Violence, and Eastern Promises. Since the release of Maps to the Stars in 2014, director David Cronenberg has not had a movie in cinemas.

The maestro of gloomy cinema is back with a reworking of one of his early films, Crimes of the Future, which he directed when he was over 80 years old. Check out the rundown below for information on everything that we currently know about Crimes of the Future, including the cast, the idea, the release date, and more.

Crimes of The Future Trailer

People are shown in the red band trailer willingly accepting home surgery on one another and executing it on themselves while simultaneously discussing the transcending status of the period. The following is taken from the synopsis that appears alongside the trailer:

‘As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice , Saul Tenser , celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin, an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission–to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.’

Crimes of The Future About

Crimes of the Future traces the progression of humanity’s alienation from the natural environment it formerly inhabited around the planet. The nature of our engagement with technology brings about profound changes in our lives, changes that must eventually be reflected in human biology. In this boundless environment, contemporary ideas of life, beauty, intimacy, and humanity are disintegrating.

Crimes of The Future Release Date

Cronenberg made the following statement regarding Crimes of the Future concurrently with the news that the picture will be screened at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival:

‘Crimes of the Future is a meditation on human evolution. Specifically – the ways in which we have had to take control of the process because we have created such powerful environments that did not exist previously.

[The movie] is an evolution of things I have done before. Fans will see key references to other scenes and moments from my other films. That’s a continuity of my understanding of technology as connected to the human body. Technology is always an extension of the human body, even when it seems to be very mechanical and non-human’

Crimes of the Future was originally published in 1970, and its plot centred on a society without women in the year 1997. The cosmetic goods that were tainted with bacteria caused an epidemic that wiped out all of the adult females.

Although there is still a guy alive who is capable of generating new organs, it appears that this ability is the extent of the two people’s shared similarities. The first version of Crimes of the Future, which was directed by Cronenberg, lasted for a little over an hour, but the current version is almost exactly twice as long. The two look to be very different from one another, so those of you who have watched the first one should be prepared for an entirely new experience throughout this journey into the future.

Crimes of the Future Cast

The actor known for his role as Aragorn in “The Lord of the Rings,” Viggo Mortensen, is actually the performance artist Saul Tenser. As a result of Tenser’s Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, he is in the unique position of being able to give other people new organs.

In private, Saul is unnerved by the changes that are taking place on the inside of him, despite the fact that he utilises his new powers in public to make his performance art easier to execute. A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, and A Dangerous Method were all movies that Viggo Mortensen and David Cronenberg worked on together in the past. In the year 2021, Mortensen dropped hints about his impending collaboration with the legendary filmmaker by saying,

“We do have something in mind. It’s something he wrote a long time ago, and he never got it made. Now he’s refined it, and he wants to shoot it. […] I would say, without giving the story away, he’s going maybe a little bit back to his origins.”

Mortensen is set to feature in a number of films in 2022, including Crimes of the Future. Besides Thirteen Lives and Eureka, he’s also in the running for a role in Ron Howard’s film.

Caprice is played by Léa Seydoux (Spectre). In Saul’s surgical performances, Caprice is the scalpel. This year, Seydoux has been in five films, including The French Dispatch and No Time to Die, and now he’s teaming up with David Cronenberg for his next project.

Crimes of The Future Release Date

In the film Twilight, Kristen Stewart plays Timlin, the National Organ Registry inspector who keeps tabs on Tenser’s sham operatic schemes. She appears to be completely enamoured with his transformation based on the trailer alone. A nomination for Stewart’s role as Princess Diana in Spencer has just been announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. See how her Oscar-nominated performance stacks up against the rest of her illustrious acting resume spanning more than two decades.

Lang Daughtery is played by Scott Speedman. In this scenario, it’s not apparent what exactly Daughtery does. Unlike the other mentioned actors, Speedman is well-known among horror fans for his parts in The Strangers and the Underworld series.

Don McKellar, Tanya Beatty, and Denise Capezza appear in Cronenberg’s latest film, which is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King.

Crimes of the Future: When to Watch and How to Do It

At the Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 17 through May 28, Crimes of the Future will have its world premiere. The film will have a restricted release one week before to its wide release on June 10, which is when it will be shown in cinemas nationwide. However, French audiences will get an early peek at the picture because of its late May release date of May 25.
