Cooper’s Treasure is an American do-cu-series presented by Discovery channel. As of yet, the show has 2 seasons and a buzz on renewal of a 3rd season is strongly active. The series refers to NASA astronaut Gordon Cooper who made a map that provides locations of treasure and riches, hidden in the depths of seas, inside centuries-old shipwrecks.
Treasure hunts are, to date, the most popular form of expeditions. Mysterious maps, brain-wracking clues and ultimate discovery of something unimaginably unique — have always kept us hooked. Movies like Indiana Jones to National Treasure to Pirates of the Caribbean presented a different world for us altogether. These films will be remembered forever as they have, ever so powerfully, touched the wildest imaginations of the human mind.
Books, on treasure hunts, gained popularity way back. R.L.Stevenson’s Treasure Island is the best example ever. Modern authors like Paolo Coelho and Dan Brown too have penned down beautiful stories about uncovering secret treasures.
As it is often said correctly, truth is stranger than fiction. This docu-series doesn’t talk about Imaginary treasure hidden in some mysterious places, being guarded by Krakens. In this case, the locations provided in Gordon Cooper’s map are very real and spot-on too.
If you are a passionate treasure hunt–lover then you will be amazed and if not, well, you are in for a treat.
Gordon Cooper’s map: origination story
In 1963, when Gordon Cooper was sent to space for the Mercury 9 mission by Nasa, he discovered a series of magnetic anomalies. Those anomalies could not deceive the brilliant astronaut and he correctly deduced them to be Shipwrecks as they were too small to be Nuclear silos which is what he was looking for in the first place.
The magnetic anomalies which looked like dark patches, were indeed shipwrecks, as confirmed much later. Gordon Cooper was very secretive regarding his awesome discovery. Then he started his decades-long extensive and tireless research regarding the location of those shipwrecks along the lines of the South Caribbean Sea.
Based on the research, he drew maps and calculations that would ultimately lead to the location of the treasure buried within the sea.

The story of Darrell Miklos
Darrell Miklos belongs to a family of treasure hunters and shipwreck- explorers who succeeded in multiple underwater historical shipwreck recoveries back in the 1960s & 1970s. Darrell had started treasure hunting at a very young age, recovering spent booster rockets for NASA’s Apollo Programme along with his father. From 1970– 1990 Darrell had already worked on excavating several shipwreck sites off the Florida coast, and later explored areas of the Bahamas and the Caribbean.
In 1978 Darrell’s father was a guest in an episode of The Merv Griffin Show that also had Astronaut Gordon Cooper. Little did they know that day would be the first day of a lifelong bonding between Gordon Cooper and Darrell that could continue till Cooper’s death.
Darrell is now an NAUI certified diver and his work has earned him an invitation to join the American Academy of Underwater Scientists, of which he has been a member for two years. In 2014 Miklos started a shipwreck recovery business in Southern California called Gemini Marine Exploration where he recovers historic shipwrecks and artefacts.
In an interview, Miklos has said the following —
“I’m probably the only person on the planet that’s in this particular situation,” Miklos told Vanity Fair. “It’s a one-off story. There is nothing like it. I doubt there will be anything like it in the future. And I’m extremely fortunate to have been gifted this information from a friend of mine who entrusted me with this. . . . I think we’re about to embark on something so historical it’s going to make news.”

Miklos has said that the design and the material do not match with shipwrecks at all. He said, in his 40 years of experience, he has never seen anything like it. Spiking up the suspense it asks an inevitable question, Could it be an alien spaceship after all?
Season 3 of Cooper’s Treasure
Discovery Channel has not officially given the green signal regarding season 3. The series, as you can imagine, is pretty different. Just imagine, a map from space, a string of mysterious anomalies, shipwrecks from hundreds of years back and just maybe lots of riches.
The fascinating topic of the docu-series has spiked up a lot of excitement among its viewers. This is not something you get to watch frequently and a positive audience response does confirm this.
After both seasons being a hit, obviously a new season is in talks but no official confirmation is there yet.
The sad Ground reality
Even though this world of shipwreck and treasure hunt seem very fascinating and remind us about the ever-curious human mind, the ground reality differs.
Miklos himself says that treasure hunting comes with its fair share of challenges. These challenges include — Getting the right permission for the excavation, Not upsetting the archaeological integrity of recovered items, putting together a proper crew and extension research that precedes the hunt and it costs a lot of money if you don’t get a sponsor.
So you see, there are always a lot of struggles behind the glory and honour of discovery.
