Jill and Gracie Lou discuss the double elimination in an exclusive interview with People magazine. They also discuss whether or not they feel deceived by their co-stars during the guess off.
Season 3 of Claim to Fame keeps surprising.
On Wednesday, July 17, Kevin and Franklin Jonas’ reality show revealed at the last minute that the guess off would be a double elimination in episode 2.
That wasn’t the most startling event, as both guessers guess wrong due to housemates’ snooping and were sent home.
Eliminated competitors Jill and Gracie Lou (Gracie Hyland) describe that moment behind the scenes with PEOPLE.
“It was sickening hearing that,” Gracie says of the double-elimination twist. “My heart dropped to my stomach when I heard [Kevin and Franklin] say that, and I thought, ‘It’s still early, we don’t have any clue really who anyone is.’ I felt very nervous.”
Jill said she wanted to continue in the competition. She chose Miguel to guess, believing his star relative was Antonio Banderas, a housewide idea. However, past footage shows Miguel and Dedrick working behind the scenes to deceive everyone.
It was reported that her uncle John Stamos is famous. While the cast was surprised, Jill claims she observed several subtle signs about her relative throughout the house, including basketball clues for Big Shot on Disney+, Greek yogurt for Oikos ads, and a San Francisco trolley for Full House.
She was sorry to go home, but Stamos’ beautiful video message uplifted her. “It was honestly incredible,” she says. “Being away from family and my phone, I established a family with the cast, but seeing a tiny bit of home was really gratifying. I’m glad I received that.”
Naomi intentionally misled Gracie about Adam’s celebrity relative, Dustin Hoffman, evicting her. Finally, Gracie was sent home and her celebrity relative was her uncle Jon Cryer.
In the moment, Gracie says she didn’t realize she’d been betrayed by Naomi. “I really fully, truly thought I could trust what she said,” she explains. “After the fact, I started to process everything and then realized, ‘Oh, okay, that’s what was going on.’”
To complicate matters, Naomi, whose clue suggested her ancestor was a Brat Pack princess, later confessed that she and Gracie’s celebrity relatives share more in common than she thought, teasing they may have featured in a ‘80s film together.
Gracie says she “had an inkling” about Naomi’s cousin on the show, but she doesn’t say how it will play out later this season.
Gracie played the long game by creating a phony identity to make people think her celebrity cousin was in country music. Given her uncle’s link to Billy Ray Cyrus, she says she would have tried to make people assume she was related to him if she had gone further in the competition.
“My uncle has been on Hannah Montana, so I wouldn’t have to lie about being on set on Hannah Montana,” she says. “I wanted to separate myself and going into the house, I was like, ‘I can totally be a country girl.’”
After being returned home, Gracie had a beautiful moment with her uncle as he picks her up. This meeting with Cryer seemed like an honor for Gracie. “He’s wonderful and always involved in my life. Growing up, watching him be fantastic and amazing, and then getting to work with him on TV is something I will treasure forever because not many people get to do that with their relatives.”
