Netflix has unveiled the first chilling look at Charlie Hunnam as infamous serial killer Ed Gein in the upcoming third season of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s anthology series Monster. The season, officially titled Monster: The Ed Gein Story, will premiere on October 3, 2025, with all episodes dropping the same day.

A Harrowing New Chapter in the Monster Anthology

Following the massive success of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Murphy and Brennan return with what Netflix is calling their “most harrowing installment yet.”

This season focuses on Ed Gein, the Wisconsin murderer and grave robber whose horrific crimes in the 1950s redefined the American nightmare and inspired some of the most iconic villains in horror history, including Norman Bates (Psycho), Leatherface (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), and Buffalo Bill (The Silence of the Lambs).

Netflix’s official logline sets the tone:

“Serial killer. Grave robber. Psycho. In the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin, a friendly, mild-mannered recluse named Eddie Gein lived quietly on a decaying farm — hiding a house of horrors so gruesome it would redefine the American nightmare.”

Charlie Hunnam’s Darkest Role Yet

Best known for Sons of Anarchy and Pacific Rim, Charlie Hunnam takes on one of the most disturbing roles of his career as Ed Gein, also known as the “Butcher of Plainfield.” Early promotional art reveals Hunnam nearly unrecognizable, embodying the recluse whose obsession with his mother and psychosis fueled unspeakable crimes.

Hunnam is also stepping behind the camera, serving as an executive producer on the series.

Who Else Stars in Monster: The Ed Gein Story?

The supporting cast brings together an impressive lineup of talent, including:

  • Tom Hollander
  • Laurie Metcalf
  • Suzanna Son
  • Vicky Krieps
  • Olivia Williams
  • Lesley Manville
  • Joey Pollari
  • Charlie Hall
  • Tyler Jacob Moore
  • Mimi Kennedy
  • Will Brill
  • Robin Weigert

Behind the Scenes

Monster: The Ed Gein Story comes from co-creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, who also serve as executive producers. Additional EPs include Max Winkler, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, Nissa Diederich, Louise Shore, Carl Franklin, and Hunnam himself.

Brennan and Winkler will share directing duties this season.

Why Ed Gein’s Story Still Terrifies

While Gein was convicted of only two murders, his gruesome acts of grave robbing and body mutilation shocked the world. More than 70 years later, his crimes remain a source of fascination, shaping pop culture’s portrayal of horror and solidifying him as a blueprint for fictional monsters.

With Murphy’s talent for unsettling true-crime storytelling and Hunnam’s transformation, Monster: The Ed Gein Story promises to be one of Netflix’s most disturbing releases to date.

Final Take

As the chilling new posters declare, “monsters aren’t born — they’re made… by us.”

Fans can stream Monster: The Ed Gein Story exclusively on Netflix starting October 3, 2025.
