As a kid, most of us have watched the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp. Before Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, there was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Going to that factory was every child’s dream. Alas! It was just a movie.

Well, we may not get to go to the factory, but we have a Netflix remake of the movie. Want to know all about it? Read on!

Taika Watiti Set To Direct The Netflix Remake

Netflix is coming with their version of the famous Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The series will be directed for Netflix by Taika Watiti. His latest venture was Jojo Rabbit for the big screen. The movie garnered him an Academy Award.

Waititi has become one of the most in-demand filmmakers in Hollywood. His blend of quirk, humour and style that can slide between genres and scale made him extremely likeable. His latest Jojo Rabbit was a humane and sly take on the war and hate that had a sentimental heart beating in the centre. Thor: Ragnarok revived a slumping superhero franchise.

Apart from the two Dahl series, Waititi is in post-production on Searchlight’s soccer comedy Next Goal Wins. He is also prepping Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which he’s writing and directing. There is also some Star Wars in his future, as he’s in talks with Lucas film to develop a movie and could work more on The Mandalorian.

More About The Series

The series is a collaboration between Netflix and Watiti. It will be a pair of animated series. The first will be based on the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the second one will be based on the characters from the movie- the Oompa Loompas.

The Oompa-Loompas are small humans. They were preyed upon in Loompaland before Wonka invited them to work at his factory. They are paid in cocoa beans and are also mischievous, loving practical jokes and singing songs

Netflix, in a statement, said that the shows would retain the quintessential spirit and tone of the original story. This will be done while building on the world and characters far beyond the pages of the Dahl book for the very first time.

The book has been adapted into movies, games, musicals. The most famous would be the Gene Wilder-starring cult classic, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Netflix made a deal with Dahl’s estate back in 2018. The roping in of Waititi marks the first steps in developing the works. The company is trying to make series on high-profile names such as Matilda, The BFG and The Twits, among other works of Dahl.
