He used to record music on cassettes and sell it out of the trunk of his car. A Mexican immigrant named Pedro Rivera took an interest in Chalino’s music, and he granted him access to a modest recording studio. Rivera and Chalino were pioneers of narcocorridos, a form of corrido that extols the virtues of the drug trade and the violent crimes that go hand in hand with it.

Son of Santos Sanchez (?–1964) and Senorina Felix (?–1991), he was raised by his parents. Chalino was born into a poor family and has had a rough upbringing. His sister, Juana, described him as an inquisitive and naughty boy who had a strong desire to pursue a career as a singer. Sanchez fled to Tijuana with his revolver and a Jess Malverde necklace after perpetrating this act of violence. Over his stay in Tijuana, he worked as a “coyote,” or immigration smuggler, transporting illegal immigrants into the country.

Chalino himself entered the United States as an undocumented migrant worker in the same year as the aforementioned incident. Starting in Oregon, he eventually relocated to Los Angeles, where he now resides with his aunt in Inglewood, California. He cleaned dishes, sold automobiles, and, according to his acquaintances, traded in tiny amounts of marijuana and cocaine, amongst other things. He also assisted his older brother, Armando, in the running of an immigration smuggling ring.
