Every show, no matter how popular it is generally, has a few episodes that are less than stellar. For a show like “Blue Bloods,” which has received overwhelmingly positive ratings and critical acclaim since its premiere, episodes that receive negative reviews are rare. Even in their prime, television series sometimes experience hitches, whether it’s due to a new or unfamiliar director, writers, or even guest stars that don’t work out in the way the producers had hoped.
Take, for example, Episode 15 of Season 8 of “Blue Bloods,” which had a 6.8 out of 10 user rating on IMDb, which indicates that it was not a favorite among viewers. What exactly went wrong? In one review, a user stated that the writing and character development were the most important factors, particularly when it came to Frank acting in ways that were inconsistent with his behavior in previous episodes and seasons.
It’s also worth noting that the lowest-rated episode of “Blue Bloods” Season 9 was not only directed by the same director as Season 8’s most disappointing episode, but it also featured the same writers — and, unfortunately, both of these episodes received a similarly negative reception to the previous season. The problem, on the other hand, has likely less to do with the creative talent involved and more to do with the fact that the latter episodes attempt to cram way too much into a small amount of time.
Episode 15 Is the Worst Episode of Season 9
To put it mildly, there is a lot going on in this episode. Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) gets into an altercation with a neighborhood activist in this episode. Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) tries to make peace with a neighbor who doesn’t want his daughter to be around Danny’s son, but it doesn’t work (Andrew Terraciano).
Jamie (Will Estes) tries to make more decisions on his own, without consulting his father. Also in distress is Anthony (Steve Schirripa), who is concerned about a potentially lethal patient who has taken his wife’s personal paperwork. The episode was characterized simply by one IMDb user as follows: “There is so much going on that it all crashes and loses momentum and basically putters out.”
Kevin Riley, Mitchell Burgess, and Robin Green wrote the episode, which was directed by executive producer David Barrett, who has directed 57 episodes of “Blue Bloods.” Barrett also directed the episode (via IMDb).
Even though it’s easy to point the finger at the director or writers when viewers express dissatisfaction with an episode, it’s important to remember that this same crew has also been responsible for some of the show’s highest-rated episodes. The more likely explanation for the dissatisfaction is that the episode simply contained a dizzying number of stories, which caused it to feel slowed down and dragged out. In any television show, there will always be episodes that not all fans can relate to or enjoy, but fortunately for “Blue Bloods,” the number of episodes that are appreciated by fans — including episodes by the same crew — is significantly more.
