Billy Corgan is enjoying his sense of self-awareness.
In an Instagram picture on Monday, September 2, the 57-year-old vocalist of Smashing Pumpkins displayed his port wine birthmark and urged his fans to “find peace with who you are.”
“I’m a fan of body positivity movements because at the end of the day it is about celebrating what makes us ‘us,’ ” the two-time Grammy winner wrote.
The first image on Corgan’s post featured him in a purple sweater with the sleeves pushed up to reveal his birthmark, which spans a portion of his wrist, arm, and hand. In addition, he included a picture of model Carlotta Bertotti as an illustration of a person “with a birthmark who has embraced her ‘difference’ with grace.”
As per the Cleveland Clinic, stains from port wine are caused by capillaries, which are microscopic blood vessels under your skin, that dilate and become “more open or stretched out than normal.”
Though generally benign, the medical facility notes that the birthmarks often darken and thicken over time and “may become raised rather than flat and smooth.”
The performer continued to explain in his Instagram message why he used to feel self-conscious about his birthmark.
“My point being that my whole life I’ve endeavoured to hide my ‘port wine’ birthmarks because as you can imagine I was teased unmercifully about them as a child,” he wrote.
“So much so that people who have known me for a decade are shocked when they finally ‘see it.’ And even now strangers will stop me on the street not because they recognize me but because they think something is wrong with me that requires medical attention,” Corgan continued.
‘Are you sick?’ and ‘Is it contagious?’ are just a couple of the queries he used to receive regarding his birthmark.’ He concluded his tweet with a “positive message for the day.”
“Whoever you are, I hope you find peace with who you are because: I would like to know that person and no one else,” his message read.
Days before, Corgan had told that he and his 31-year-old wife, Chloé Mendel Corgan, were expecting their third child together.
“We are overjoyed to announce that our family is growing! It’s an exciting time for us, although unexpected,” the pregnant mother said. The couple’s other two kids, Augustus, 8, and Philomena, 5, will also welcome this new addition.
