At this point, it’s pretty clear that “Un Verano Sin Ti” by Bad Bunny was the most popular record of 2022. Not only was it number one on Billboard for 13 weeks in a row, but it was also streamed 4.6 billion times in the U.S. alone. The record-breaking album sold the equivalent of 273,000 units through streams and downloads. Two songs, “Tit Me Pregunto” (1.4 billion streams) and “Me Porto Bonito” (1.5 billion streams), were the first to reach 1 billion streams. “Un Verano Sin Ti” has changed the world, but it keeps getting passed over for Album of the Year. But tonight, at the 2023 Premio Lo Nuestro Awards, which were shown live on Univision, “El Conejo Malo” finally won the lbum Del Ao (Album of the Year) award. It’s about time!

Bad Bunny‘s song “Un Verano Sin Ti” has been praised and won prizes, but it has always been considered musica urbana. Too long, rappers, reggaetoneros, and other urban artists of color have only won awards in the urban music category, as if their work wasn’t good enough for Artist of the Year or Album of the Year. Bad Bunny lost the record of the Year award at last year’s Latin Grammys to Rosala for her 2022 record “MOTOMAMI.” This year, Harry Styles won the Album of the Year award for “Harry’s House.”

But unlike the Grammys and Latin Grammys, fans vote for the Premio Lo Nuestro, and it looks like Benito’s fans came through. Sebastián Yatra won four awards, including Pop-Male Artist of the Year, Pop-Song of the Year, Pop/Ballad-Song of the Year, and Pop-Album of the Year. He was nominated for 10 awards that night.

Bad Bunny won three awards: Album of the Year, Urban Album of the Year, and Urban Collaboration of the Year. This year, he was not at the Premio Lo Nuestro to pick up his awards.

After all of those snubs at award shows, many of the Puerto Rican artist’s fans realized that it doesn’t make sense to look to award shows for recognition and vindication. But the fact that Bad Bunny won an Album of the Year Premio Lo Nuestro and not just an Urban Album of the Year award shows that the people have spoken.
