In March 2017, Biles, who is officially the most decorated U.S. gymnast in Olympic history, underwent tattooing of the Olympic rings, as reported by Teen Vogue. According to POPSUGAR, her other body ink includes the phrase “And still I rise,” her birth year of 1997, two small butterflies, and the words “Golden” and “XO.”

“Before I got this tattoo, it was a saying that I loved — obviously, Maya Angelou — and I was like, ‘And still I rise is perfect,’ because I feel like that’s kind of the epitome of my career and my life story,” she said. “Because I always rise to the occasion, and after all of the traumas and downfalls, I’ve always risen.”

It is unsurprising that Biles may opt for new body art following the Olympics, as she and her compatriots Jade Carey, Sunisa “Suni” Lee, Jordan Chiles, and Hezly Rivera also secured gold in the women’s gymnastics team final.

Competing with her colleagues was an accomplishment in itself after she was compelled to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics due to the disorienting condition known as the twisties.

“At the beginning of the day, I started off with therapy this morning, so that was super exciting. I told her I was feeling calm and ready and that’s kind of exactly what happened,” she told reporters, including PEOPLE, at a press conference following the women’s team final.

“After I finished vault, I was relieved. I was like, ‘Phew,’ because [there were] no flashbacks or anything,” said Biles. “I did feel a lot of relief, and as soon as I landed vault, I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I’m definitely — we’re going to do this.’ “
