American Rust Season 2 Release Date, Cast, Plot!

On September 12, 2021, Showtime aired “American Rust.” Based on Philip Myers’ 2009 novel of the same name and set in an impoverished Western Pennsylvania Rust Belt town, it is the perfect setting for a crime show. In the starring role, Jeff Daniels played Del Harris, the ethically conflicted and eventually corrupted head of police. No, you’re not the only one who thinks of “Mare of Easttown” when you read this description of a Pennsylvania crime drama on a premium cable network starring an award-winning actor.

Even though “American Rust’s” Season 1 ratings weren’t very strong (according to TV Series Finale), the show still left plenty of potential for Season 2 and beyond, despite its complete adaptation of the original material from Myers’ novel. Since the Season 1 conclusion of “American Rust” aired on November 7 of last year, we’ve learned a lot about what to expect from Season 2.

American Rust Season 2

There’s a good chance “American Rust” has been rendered obsolete by this latest development. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review was the first to disclose Showtime had cancelled “American Rust” on January 25. The newspaper also carried a statement from the cable network explaining their decision. According to the Tribune-Review, here is what Showtime has to say:

“We can confirm that ‘American Rust’ will not be moving forward with a second season. We would like to thank our partners at Boat Rocker, our talented showrunner Dan Futterman and the rest of the wonderful writers, and our amazing cast led by Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney.”

Showtime ordered the pilot episode of “American Rust” in July of this year after a long period of development hell (via Variety). Season 1 ultimately began production in March 2021 (through Trib-Live) after several delays caused by pandemics and broadcast in September 2021. In early November, the season ended, and with it, the “American Rust” tale ended as well.

American Rust Season 2: Cast

American Rust Season 2

Season 2 of “American Rust” will not air because Showtime has cancelled the show as of late January 2022, and there will be no Season 3. Consequently, Jeff Daniels, Maura Tierney, Bill Camp (“The Queen’s Gambit”), David Alvarez (“West Side Story”), Alex Neustaedter (“Colony”), and the rest of the outstanding ensemble cast of the Showtime series will have to say goodbye for the rest of their lives.

Season 1 introduces fans to Daniels in the role of Del Harris, the police chief of a small town. Debra Tierney had the role of Del’s love interest, warehouse worker Grace Poe, and Neustaedter had the role of her son, Billy, who was left in a vegetative state at the conclusion of Season 1. Mark Pellegrino (“Supernatural”) played Virgil, Billy’s father and Grace’s spouse, and he helped to round out the Poes’ ensemble.

Alvarez, who portrayed Billy’s closest buddy Alex English, also made an appearance, as did Camp, who played Alex’s father Henry, and Julie Mayorga, who played Alex’s sister (and Billy’s ex-girlfriend) Lee. Finally, Rob Yang (Succession) made an appearance as Del’s deputy Steve Park, a figure who was expected to play a larger part if Season 2 was to be announced in the near future.

American Rust Season 2: Plot

The first season of “American Rust” finished on so many cliffhangers that it felt like it was quite apparent where the programme might have gone next, as we mentioned in our post on whether or not the show would be renewed for a second season.

It is a significant development because, after spent Season 1 investigating Billy for the murder of police officer turned drug dealer Pete Novick (Jim True-Frost), Del finds himself now investigating and covering up a triple homicide that he is suspected of carrying out.

If you missed it, Del was forced to kill two of Novick’s accomplices, as well as their 87-year-old relative, in self-defense after being attacked by Novick’s men. When Season 1 came to a close, Del’s deputy Steve Park began to have doubts about his role in the deaths.
